Excellent post. I would add to this that winning or losing, having Woods endorse your product in 2011 just isn't a smart investment. He doesn't appeal to the youth golfers, most of the older guys grew sour on him 2009, and many that were fans justifiably turned after seeing the abhorrent behavior he was invested in off course. Women golfers, I don't think they are big fans either.
Woods definitely moves the needle, but sadly now much of the interest is to watch the freak show he has become. Dennis Rodman also moved the needle, as does Mike Vick and other regrettable sports figures. It's important not to confuse interest with trust, especially in regards to a consumer base.

Tiger does get air time... but that means nothing to certain people, that also know the media needs Tiger, more then sponsors care about the media's view of Tiger. TW can win one, maybe many, still most conscientious vendors won't consider re-associating with him, out of fear of a repeat; and they'd be right.

Let me offer up this comparable... there were a number of big $$$ sponsors coming out in support of a few cable TV shows with questionable sex content. Suddenly they came to realize that wasn't the best decision and since pulled out. Those shows have since shut down too. My point is people were behind Tiger because of implied public character/image - his actions and divorce antics harmed that. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if conservative Chevron wasn't chewing at the bit waiting for their contract to expire. They surely didn't drop the sponsorship becasue their P&L is leaning on red.

The tour is having a difficult time maintaining any sponsorships. No surprise a "unofficial" PGA event loses a sponsor. As far as Tiger goes lets face it if the best sponsor he can get is FUSE Science for the bag, then the "big" money is definitely going away from Golf.

Hopefully it would take most of their marketing budget to do it, thereby relieving us of having to watch their commercials every ten minutes on GC. What is with the separate bath tubs anyway?

Agreed your overall assessment. He was essentially the "face" of those companies and when he faced conflicts that tarnished his character/image, etc., it reflects on the company as well.

A couple points I would add, time does heal some wounds. It seems like a good portion of the public has "forgiven" him and wants him to play his best again. Even the announcers of the last tournament were commenting that Zac Johnson was probably jokingly asking his caddy who the crowd was pulling for.

Also, if Tiger starts winning and excelling at his sport again, it can help rebuild his marketability. His damaged public image may not fit with some companies going forward, but continued success will make his achievements marketable and desireable for other companies.

I will say that I was surprised that Rolex signed on with Tiger so soon after Tag dropped him.
