Distance of my club's.. Its not adding up???

Recommended Posts

Driver 11* stiff 235

Hybrid 17* stiff 195

hybrid 20* Stiff 175

5 iron Stiff 150

6iron 140

7iron 130

8iron 120

9iron 110

Pw 100

50 80-100

The reason I use stiff is because I just flat out hit them straighter, but I seem to have a gap from my irons to my woods. Iam tired of out driving my friends and having to hit a 5 iron in when they hit a 8 iron.

So lesson with the irons or a training aids??? Our does this look about right for distances???

I would check the lengths of your irons to see if they're in synch with your hybrids. I've made hybrids for myself and tend to make them longer I should, so I end up with a large gap. I'm usually OK with it, since I'm usually using the hybrids off the tee on shorter/tighter holes and not as approach clubs. You might also have a larger loft gap between your 20* hybrid and your 5 iron. Get them measured and see where the gap may lie.

a 20* is usually a 3 hybrid replacement so you are going to have a gap unless you get a 4 hybrid which would be 22 or 23*

Your distances aren't too different from mine. Are you sure you fit into a stiff? I know you say you hit it straighter but maybe a stiffer regular would help you? Also, maybe a lighter shaft to get more clubhead speed? I have tried out the KBS Tour 90's and think I might switch to them next year because I like their feel and weight.

I do agree with the above poster that you should add a 4 hybrid. Looks like you have an open spot or two before you hit 14 clubs (unless you are carrying a ton of wedges).

Let your inner club ho out of the box! You've got 11 clubs, leaving you 3 slots to fill. It's not unreasonable to think that you could close the gaps simply by adding clubs and/or adjusting which hybrids/woods you carry. I suggest looking further into your hybrid inventory... maybe add two more and be sure that doing so closes the gaps after 5 iron, and before driver.

i hit my 10.5 driver and 18H, 21H, similar distances as you, but see a good 15 yards more distance with the irons and my lofts are weak. i do have regular shafts though.

try Pete Cowen's axe drill. hes a swing coach for a ton of European players. really one of the best out there.

If you are hitting your driver 235, 150 on a 5i isn't out of line to me. You have decent gaps between each club, and something to hit from every distance....might be OK like that?

Your distances and gaps seem to make sense to me.

My distances are different than yours, but I had a 25 yard gap between my 27* 5-iron and my 22* 4-hybrid. Not only is there more than a 4* loft gap, but I bet your hybrid is a couple inches longer with a lighter graphite shaft. My club ho solution is I just bought a 24* 4-iron and I'll drop either the 2-hybrid or the 3-wood depending on the course.

Something doesn't seem right. I have the same distance as you with my driver (10.5* stiff flex) and in the wedges (52* gap 90 and PW of around 110). I play regular flex in all of my clubs except the Driver and wedges. In my irons I play Dynamic Gold (R300) and my 8-iron is my 140 club. I have about 10-12 yard changes between them (7-iron 152; 9-iron around 125).

Question: How is your trajectory? Are you hitting nice high mortar rounds with your irons or are they on more of a mid to low trajectory?

Aside from that, two things come to mind: 1. Maybe your lofts are off on your irons and, 2. you may want to look at a stable R flex shaft like the DG-R300. My hybrids and fairway woods have R flex Grafalloy ProLaunch Blue shafts which are very low-torque and stable. They're easy to control and give just the right amount of 'help' without feeling whippy.

Let us know and good luck,

Todd

I am a flipper, and have always hit the ball high, but I will say this,

I just got my new ping i20's with cfs reg flex shaft and my 7 iron went 143 even hit one 149. This was on a launch monitor so I need to verify this on the course. I will update friday after I play a local par 3 course

I may have been playing a terrible incorrect shaft for my swing

You may be on the right track with the Pings in R flex.

I am a reformed flipper too. It is (hopefully was) caused mostly from losing your wrist angle at the top of the backswing (at least it was for me). I honestly believe I was doing this in an effort to gain more distance --- a bigger backswing has to result in more clubhead speed, right? Wrong, at least for me. My point being that if you weren't getting the distances you wanted you could be doing the same thing.

The good news is that if the Pings feel good with a softer flex you may be able to tighten up your swing and get rid of the flip. Good luck and keep us posted.

First off, good topic and very timely and I've been questioning the shaft stiffness on my clubs. My stats are similar to yours but I shorter on the drive and longer on the irons. I play stiffs all around including PX F6.0 on my irons, but I will be downgrading to regular flex on all clubs so that I can get more distance - I know that I don't swing that fast and I feel like I got the stiff shafts because my ego got in the way. Anyways, hope the regular shafts will help me and perhaps you.

On another note, I second the tip on the tourstriker. I used to hit flip quite a bit but now I'm compressing the ball and hitting it farther. As a comparison, I've gained appx. 10~13 yards on all of my clubs after time with the tourstriker - same clubs, same shaft.

cheers-
