I played the Judge (along with the other two, btw) on Thursday. It's most certainly extremely difficult from those back tees. But (at the risk of Animal coming and saying I don't know what I'm talking about or just like to bash the Trail) some of the par 3's are simply idiotic from the back tees. The 6th hole is 231 to an island green. The 16th is 256 yards to a green on a peninsula with a bunker in front of the green and the entire land area is only about 35 yards deep. From the white tees, even the orange tees, where everyone plays, the course is fine. But from the back markers, it gets stupid. Plus, the par 3's are kind of like Groundhog Day anyway. And the 11th hole was just bad from the back tees. However, after all that running the course down...I liked the 1st hole quite a bit, has a ton of options off the tee if you take enough time to look for them. 18th hole is very good as well, some friends of mine don't like the waterfall, but they have to get water from the top of the property down somehow, might as well make it look cool. I also really liked 10 from the back markers, 711 yards. I'd play it again, that's for sure, but yes, it's really hard.

This is tough subjective question. I guess Oakmont was the toughest course I played but I played very well there. My home course is 7500 from the tips and is a Pete Dye, I've played a ton of rounds there and a few times a year I step all the way back. From the tips she's all you want.

Kiaweh - Ocean course- Beautiful Summer day but the wind was 20 to 30 all day- I kid you not. I will never forget absolutely killing a 4 iron dead into the wind and the shot was less than 150--- so windy my playing partner and I had to shout to talk to one another- yup- that windy.

Tot Hill Farms was mentioned by a few people here-It's a short course, so you get there and look at the scorecard and thin,"Man, what's the big deal?". The vast majority of the shots you'll hit there have a very small margin for error-- Many of the holes, if you miss the fairway or green you're either in streams or riccocheting off of rocks and boulders or in awkward stances in steep faced bunkers.. Mid to low single digit golfers won't see near the trouble that a 10+ handicapper will. It will demoralize the guy who routinely shoots 80 or 82 on his home course and goes to Tot and probably won't break 90. There are so many holes that a "newbie" can easily get a triple or higher--- mistakes are just uber penal there. The par three's are ranked the easiest on the course, but man if you miss the green on them you are probably sunk. Sure is a fun track though and I've played there at least 20 times.

Another North Carolina course that's long and tough is Tanglewood Championship course. Long knockers will read the yardage and won't think it will be that tough- 7050 yards, but it's a par 70 and several of the holes leave you with 200 yard shots into shallow greens- and a couple have a big difference in elevation (just a few though). Add to that 2 of the par threes are 235 and 243 and both have water left and right next to the green. Can't recall exactly how many bunkers there are but I know there are over 100 and you'll be in them.

The course is fun from Blue tips- but be sure to play from the Gold marker plates-- 7050 yards, 75.6 hcap, 143 slope, par 70. I know everybody on here say play from the tees according to your hcap-- but even if you're a single digit guy, playing for the back markers and coming out well is very hard to do unless you're consistently hitting 290+ drives.

Love the course, but she's a toughy from the Championship plates. Just my .02

[Deceptively Short]

Carnoustie in a gale - probably 30-40mph winds. It could barely be called golf. No clue as to whether you could carry the little burns that cross the course with any given club due to the gusting wind. I played the Ocean course of middle'ish tees on a breezy day and it was a piece of cake compared to Carnoustie in a wind. For sheer tough design Les Bordes in Frnace is a beast, though beautiful - if you can break 80 off the back tees you get your name on an honours board in the club (there are very few on it and they are almost all European Tour Pros).

Doral Blue Monster. May not have been the longest but it was the hardest. Of course this was 25 years ago and it was our first rounds of the season, which didn't help. I left around 60 balls there that week(throughout Miami)

Ocean Course, by far. The Medalist in Jupiter is an easy second. Torrey Pines was also a brute, and round out the list with Baltusrol lower and Pinehurst #2
