Dye layout with just a long, brutal layout.

Played Carnoustie the week after the '99 British Open. Far and away the hardest I've played...

Length wise, nothing really stands out. Ive played some in the 7350 range which is plenty long.

Butler National comes to mind- the day before my wedding!

I haven't played much oustide of CT either so I would agree with lake of isles north. Also just played Yale and that was tough as well.

I'm hoping to get down to Kiawah next spring so my list will expand.

I think the greenhead flies make Galloway so tough!!!!
Stone Harbor is underrated, its 7000 yds par 72, course rating is 74 and slope 140 and it will beat you up, escpecially when the wind blows. The course kills me, think I broke 80 once on a calm day. We love taking single digit players there and bet they cant break 90 from the tips, its easy money. Now it might have something to do the fact we leave the casino and head straight to the course, skipping the sleep part!!!!
18 is a strong hole, narrow blindish tee shot and then to a very deep narrow green thats half surrounded by water and the wind plays hell with your second shot

Played Turtle Point (Nicklaus design) when I was at Kiawah. Very nice course. IIRC, from a difficulty standpoint, Turle Point is smack in the middle with Ocean course obviously being the toughest. I think Couar Point was considered the easiest.

I think the toughest I have ever played was Black Forest in northern Michigan. We used to play it from the tips. 145 slope and a 75.3 rating. It's a brute.

Bethpage Black two weeks before the open (since it's public, they keep it open almost right before the tourney). Kapalua is second (so windy!)

hardest course i've actually played is the Monarch Dunes Challenge Course, it's actually a par three course, so it obviously isn't the longest course i've played, but it was by far the hardest 9 holes i've ever played.... and it was actually rated the 2 best par three course in the US...

Wolf Creek in Mesquite, Nevada was the toughest I have played. Only 6939 from the tips but 75.4 rating and 154 slope. The desert views are gorgeous but the elevation changes on the course tee boxes to fairway made club selection tough for me.

Silver Lakes (Backbreaker/Heartbreaker) on the RTJ Trail. 7,600 77.9/151. We played on a calm day and it was still rough. Three-level, elevated greens. Some 2 clubs above the fairway.

Classic example of a golfer playing a tee box too hard, caught up in distance and not slope. That course is pitch and putt easy for anyone who can hit a 3 wood decent.

I play both of these a few times a year and live about half way between the two. Both are extremely difficult. Stone Harbor is a little gimmicky. I'd rate Galloway as one of the best player's courses in the country. Better bring your A game to either one of these courses. A laser is a must on these courses cause knowing yardage is key unless you play them regularly. Both courses are visually deceiving meaning shots that appear exceptionally long really aren't and vise verse.

The Conservatory Course at Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast, FL. Tom Watson design. 7776 yards with 78.2/150 from the tips. Played this in March with the wind blowing, no range time before, and the kind of hangover you have after your first night of your fist golf trip with your buddies. Ate me alive.

Hardest= Hardest as far as slope goes is either Tobacco Road or Tot Hill Farm, hardest as far as score in relation to how I felt I played was Eagle Point

RTJ Capitol Hill "The Judge" from the tips...

78.5/147, 7813 yards. Par 3s of 250 and 265, all carry over water (the tees are not on the scorecard, but were there when i played). two 700-yard+ par 5s.

lol. it's tough, but try the par 3 course there....you'll probably score better on the real track

The Painted Canyon course at Promontory Golf Club in Park City, UT. 8098 yards from the tips, 78.7 rating and 155 slope. The wind blows most of the time and Nicklaus made a mess of a beautiful piece of property by making the green complexes way too severe. It is a wonderful layout but it borders on unfair on every approach shot and short game shot. I love hard and challenging layouts but this course was not enjoyable and I have played it 4 times. Even when I have played the next set of tees forward, it is still so extreme. Your margin for error on approach shots is the smallest i have ever played. Five yards off in all directions and you are hosed.

hey sweet release, just down the road from hammock is the exquisite Plantation Bay Layout with Prestwick plus the toughest and primo sweetest North & South Club De Bonmont.

Teravista in Round Rock, TX

The layout isn't particularly long or challenging but the greens were wicked fast and the rough around the greens just swallowed balls! My first time playing outside of the northeast and I've never played greens so hard and fast. I had 48 putts, including 2 4-putts.

Still the Black. Haven't played it since it was lengthened so I can only imagine what it's like now. They continue to put new tee boxes in so I'm looking forward to playing it again.

The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island.
Oh my goodness... I had an off day, and being a double digit handicapper, an off day on that course meant a triple digit score!!! It was the best golf experience I've ever had, plus I made birdie on one of the par 3's on the back nine!! Next time I go, I want to be able to enjoy the parts of the course OTHER than the waste areas, tall grass, and that huge water hazard running along side every hole (I think it was a pond or something)

For me, Bayonet in Monterey was the hardest and most complex course I have played. Lots of sand, and wicked greens.

You were only about a mile or two away as the crow flies. Whole different world from Seaview. Galloway is the most exclusive private course in Atlantic or Cape May Counties. Hate the gaudy clubhouse but love the course and practice facility. A lot of comparisons with Pine Valley which is about an hour away.
