Ping Eye 2 wedges

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know the reason/s for designing the Ping Eye 2 wedge lofts at: PW 50.7, SW 57.7 and LW 61.0?

Solheim was a smart guy so I'm assuming all arguments regarding lofts and yardage gapping must have gone into the design process.

Back in the day, was the PW suppose to be THE feel club, played with choking down, partial swings etc?

Was there a reason he didn't go 52..56...60 for instance?

I have always wondered this as well, I always assumed these were average lofts measured over time. I would guess the original specs were 51,58 and 61

Maybe because 4 degree gaps is too close together?

Not sure, but I can tell you that for me, they flat out work! I've caught myself in the trap of trying to space out the lofts "just right", but the Eye 2 PW, SW, and LW are just about perfect for me. I'll not usually hit the SW or LW for full shots, but I will with the PW. I'm using them with the G20 irons up through the PW with that set. All gaps work just fine. The grinds on the original Eye 2 wedges are great.

As above, when the Eye2s came out the standard lofts for clubs were about one club weaker than today. I still have my old Eye2s. If you go on Ping's site, under classic clubs and look at the lofts for Eye2s you will see that the PW was 48, some were 50 *s. Also, when Eye2s came out folks were just beginning to use LWs a lot. So as someone else said SW lofts at that time were 56/57/58 degrees. I also have the new XG wedges. They are 56 and 60, but you can order them 54 and 58. Hope this helps.

original ping eye 2 pw loft was 48deg

So the Ping website that states the loft was 50.7 degrees is wrong?

The Eye2+ pitching wedge loft was 48.5 degrees, but those came out a number of years after the original Eye2.

My PW is 51.5 and my S is 57.5 degrees. I also have the L wedge but never needed to use it much and it generally stays home and pouts. I believe Ping made several lofts and bounces for the S but never felt the need to look for or explore them. What I have works for me, albeit I also use my 9 and 8 for the short game depending on what I'm trying to do. Frankly, even now I still use my W more for feel shots mostly because even after 20+ years of use, my S wedge still bites more than I am comfortable with but is so useful in difficult positions I can't change it.

BTW, the Eye 2 actually had lower lofts than the clubs that preceded them, at least in my experience. I just liked them originally because they were stainless and therefore long lived and low maintenance. Now I can't get myself to retire them permanently.

I think Shambles is correct. For a long time I carried the Eye2 wedges with my I5s. I used the old W or PW as a gap wedge between the I5 PW and the Eye2 SW. I did the same thing as well. Used the W for a lot of pitch, chip, short shots because the SW just stopped when it hit. Wasn't hard to flop that sucker either. The new XGs are great-to me- but they don't stop anything like the old Eye2s. Every now and then I remind my ego that I'm not hitting the ball as far as I did 20 years ago. I'm hitting the same numer club, but with 'jacked-up' lofts. My I5 and I15 PWs are 46*. That's one club more than my old Eye2s.

Thanks guys. I'll be sticking to the three Eye 2 wedges. I think it was a bit of a mental thing with me thinking I always need a club inbetween the PW and SW and drop the origina SW.

I much prefer the Eye 2 wedge grinds over the Eye 2 + ones and also like the idea of staying with the classic set over any XG wedges.

Such a headgame!

Who cares about the loft numbers. Practice with a few of them and go with what is comfortable then get a feel for how high and long you hit them. That way just takes confusion over lofts out of your head...doesn't matter if a wedge is 47, 48, or 49, or a SW 54, 55, 56 degrees, as long as you practice and know what the do. Just a thought. I keep Eye 2 SW and LW after my set PW. Love them!!!
