1st Annual Boyne MI Trip Memorial Day Weekend

need ideas

So a group of 8 from our course in Canada will be going to Boyne Highlands resort Saturday-Tuesday over the Memorial weekend. This is our 1st annual trip so we are all new at this. We are all good friends who get along well, but have 1 problem. We are hoping to play a Ryder Cup style with teams of 4. Here is the problem in our group we have handicaps of 3,4,6,7,7,7,9, and 21. Can anyone suggest games we can play that will be fun and incorporate our man with the 21hdcp. The gentleman organizing the trip asked me to try and find some games we can play. So I ask you my fellow WRXers to help us out...Should we go teams of 2 or keep them at 4? I know the final round he wants to have 3 matches of straight up match play. Any other ideas would be fantastic....Thanks guys

If hdcps are legit, should make no difference that one player is significantly higher. Utilize USGA stroke allocation for match play and all will be fair. If I recall correctly, match play is 80% of the difference in handicaps. I.E. if the 21plays a 6 the difference is 15 x 80%= 12 strokes

I go on a couple of trips to boyne a year. We play two rounds a day for 4 days. We usually play our own ball, low net the first round. second round is some type of 2 man best ball, alternate shot game. We range from a 5 to 36 so scrambles can be very tough. Also do a blind draw thru the weekend rounds for partners. Greenies on all par 3 is fun. Never done a ryder cup match, we dont have enough good players. Some better guys have nassau bets. The money is small enough no one gets hurt, except everyone hates me as a partner becasue I quit at 14 on the heather, I hate that course's last 4 holes. Most dont carry a handicap so the organizer uses past scores on trips for handicaps.

The Heather is the last course we are playing. Thank you for some ideas. This is our first trip and just looking for some ideas.

Great resort. Make sure u hit the heather, the hills, bay harbor is worth the up charge and there new course hidden river is pretty nice as well. Really not a bad course up there.

I'm not sure of the exact order but we are stopping at Traverse Bay Golf Club on the Saturday, I know Bay Harbour is in there somewhere and we are closing with the Heather

Great choice, we do an annual trip in August and its always a great time. We take 8 guys and the handicaps range from 5-15 and it is no problem. We break the games up and do a mixture of DOTS (1$ for each greenie, sandie, hole, no putts and long drive on 5's), Nassua, and Wolf. We have stayed at all three locations and the Highlands is great because of how many courses are located there. All courses are great but the Hills and Bay Harbor are pretty amazing and worth planning your trip around. The highlight of our trip is our last dinner of the trip which is at the Bay Harbor Inn at sunset, great way to end your trip!

True North is definitely worth a look as well while you're there. The golf at the Boyne Courses is better overall, but for 60 bucks or so, the views at Little Traverse Bay cant' be beat. Get ready for lots of 3 putts at LTB, some of the hardest greens to read of any course I've ever played.

No kidding!! I've played that course a couple of times and still have no idea how to read them. Everybody says the grain runs toward the lake but you get up there and you are so disorientated that you have no idea where the lake is. With the grain, they are lightening fast. Against it they are incredibly slow. I've had downhill putts just stop and uphill putts roll off the green! Arrggghh

To the original poster, one of the games we like is 3-2-1. We play it group to group. You count the 3 best scores on par 3's, the 2 best on par 4's and the single best on par 5's.

As long as you don't have alternate shot, just handicaps and you will be fine. Go with four man teams and you will balance out the 21.

The Ross and Heather are the two best at the Highlands. Hills is close. Moor is AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

My 3rd time playing it, I think I figured it out-at least enough to keep my total putts under 40. I started looking back at the tee box once I got to the green and looking at the general slope of the land. That seemed to have a lot more impact on the overall break of putts than anything else-IMO
