NXT Tour vs Tour S

Driver Launch and total spin
So which one of these new NXTs has the lowest launch off of driver and which one has the most green side spin. I understand the S is softer but does it offer anything else other than being softer?

you know i think titleist says in their ball comparison chart that the nxt tour actually spins more greenside than the s does o.O, and is also better for distance off the tee apparently, o.O i found that intriguing
[/quote]

This makes me think the NXT-Tour S will be a sales failure. Why buy it when it costs the same as the better performing NXT-Tour. It may be softer but the few times I've played the NXT-Tour it was adaquately soft. I played Titleist balls for the last 25 years, but they have serious competition both from a performance and a value standpoint. I play the Srixon Z-Star now (previously ProV1 and ProV1X).

See this is what im thinking as well...im not understanding why they would make the same ball only softer. What benefits does it have?

I want to have stability in wind with lower launch and adequate greenside spin.

So Ive been testing these 2 for 2 weeks and 6 rounds (2 last sunday, 2 last friday, and 2 yesterday) alternating with the Callaway HEX, ProV1, V1X and Pentas.
On soft greens, the NXT Tour stop dead, no release, or back spin, the NXT Tour S, spins too much for me on soft greens.
On hard greens, the NXT Tour will not hold a green if you do low shots, high shots will bounce, check and roll a lot. (when I mean hard greens, I really mean it), the Tour S, will bounce, check and do a some forward roll.

On distance:
The NXT Tour is just stupid long, and I mean stupid long.
Hole 1 yesterday 328 yards slight down wind, firm conditions, hard greens, tight pins.
Penta TP - 4 yards off the green
HEX 75 ft to hole.
NXT Tour 60ft to hole.

Distance is just really stupid, but on greens like yesterday the ball will not work.

I normally dont hit driver off that hole, but since I was testing balls I decided to go for it.

Trajectory:
NXT Tour Driver: Mid
Hex: Mid
Penta: Mid-High

Both rounds yesterday were 80, my index 7, sadly as I said, some pins were not good at all, and the greens were like a damned rock, even ProV1 had a bit of problem, but managed.
Too much sun lately in PR, which is good, but damned when the Green Keeper will not keep the greens properly *hope he reads this...*

I'm a 2 hdcp, and have a problem with spinning the ball too much with my short irons. I can't play the ProV1x, Penta, Bridgestone B330...none of them. I've had a buddy who is on Nike staff and he's been feeding me the Nike Tour One D* balls, which are an awesome ball...but I still spin them a bit too much. He gave me a bunch of those after I played the retail Nike Tour One D and found it's performance around the greens lacking. Just can't get it to lock up. I've played the NXT Tour a little bit in the past and have found the performance to be similar to the retail Nike Tour One D, good on full shots but lacked control around the greens.

So, I decided to buy a dozen of the new yellow NXT Tour S ball and give it a try. I also have three new conforming groove wedges in my bag this year. I've played four rounds with it over the past month and have shot two 76's and two 77's. Thus far, I have no complaints. I have had no distance drop off, hit a 340 downwind drive and a 307yd downwind 3-wood yesterday (20mph wind). On full short iron shots, I'm consistently seeing the ball hop forward and then spin back to within 5-10 ft of my pitch mark. On lower shots I'm getting a one hop and lock up...and I've had no problem locking it up on little chips, pitches and bunker shots. As for long irons, I hit thee 4-irons yesterday into greens, on all three I got one hop forward 5-10 ft, then a grab and another couple feet of roll. I'm playing on normal firmness greens that were rolling at an 11 yesterday and always play between 10-12.

Off of the putter face the balls feels very soft, no "click" sound or feel that you would have with the old NXT Tour.

For now at least, I've found my new ball.

The NXT Tour is a 3-piece and the NXT Tour S is a 2-piece, so they are not the same. With that said, many companies have created two identically constructed balls with the only difference being compression (Callaway Tour i/ix, Nike 20Xi S/X, Srixon ZStar/X, original TM TP Red/Black, etc)

I'm confused by this. "Stupid long" sounds like "really long", but the Pentas went a lot further. Could the poster please clarify?

I am using the NXT Tour Soft in Yellow and lovin it. It lasts more rounds than the Bridgestone RX and spins better. I like a yellow ball in the Florida sun and sky and this one is perfect. An added plus is its les expensive at 32 than 44 per dozen

Thanks for the good thoughts guys...my experience is like Canegolfer's.... I have had several rounds with the S model and it spins more than than the RX that I had been using & for sure goes longer! I have hit many drives that are 20 yards + longer than before the NXT S was in the bag. Another point....due to playing to much football in the past, my hands, elbows, etc. are full of arthritis ... the S just "feels" better....not hurtful to the old paws! Also, I love the yellow...don't know why, just do!

  • 2 weeks later...

I was just given a dozen of the yellow nxt tour s golfballs and I was surprised. I usually play pro v1 or penta Tp sometimes even top flite v2 gamer (I know, laugh all you want, they are a good ball for the price) but these nxt tour s balls were actually decent. They dont check that well on the green but I've hit a few 315+ so I can say they are long. I like the overall feel of the ball but I will only play them if they bump the price down.

Played 9 with the NXT Tour-S last week.
(SS under 100, normally play Penta or V1X)

The S is a GREAT ball on all full shots. Great distance and roll. Full irons one hop and stop on mid-to-firm greens.

Unfortunately, I won't continue to play this ball. Simply not enough short-game spin for me. But I also don't get enough short-game spin from the 2011 B330-RX, the Diablo Tour, or the Gamer 2...

The search continues for a lower trajectory, lower compression rocket with good short-game spin....

Will test the Callaway Hex Chrome and 2012 B330 next....

Driver--Ping i20, 3 wood--Ping G25
Hybrids--G25
Irons--Taylormade Burner Graphite Shafts
Wedges--Taylormade Burner 2.0 Steel

I agree. Drove it well, held firm greens on all full shots, but even with a lob wedge, it releases more than I'd like on pitches and chips. BUT it might be my i20 conforming wedges, my previous Cleveland wedges are not. Time will tell when I go back to Pro V's in the summer.

FWIW- I played the new Callaway Hex Black today for 9 holes and wasn't impressed.

Late-
