My 9 to 3

Recommended Posts

I won't give away my faults ahead of time; I'd rather see what you all think based on these videos. My current goal is a Slicefixer-approved 9 to 3. Thanks in advance for any and all comments!

hands and club are being sucked inside way too much....club needs to be intersecting your right bicep. right now your hands are just going back behind your right hip and then back to the ball. if you continued this into a 10-3 or full swing...you'd just be stuck stuck stuck stuck.

and not enough weight coiled over your right foot.

I started taking a more flat/inside backswing years ago before I got into swing mechanics and have kept it because it feels right and helps me stay shallow in the downswing. That being said, it is easily the most obvious issue with my swing. I only started taking video a few months ago and felt a bit sheepish when I first saw what my backswing looks like. It is also probably the most fixable part of my swing (along with constant work on setup) and causes problems serious with long irons. I compensate by moving HARD left (and perhaps too far laterally forward) early in the downswing which works with short irons and wedges, but also gives me my biggest miss: straight pull.

I definitely will correct not having a proper right pivot point for the backswing as well. I started working on this swing a little over a year ago and my major thought at the start was staying more centered in the backswing, but it's time to correct and fine tune that part.

Are you missing right much? I stopped the video at impact. You're in a pretty good position.

My miss in 9-3 wedge shots is a 10 yard pull.

It may just be me, but all I can do when watching this is look at your grip? Are you interlocking?

Ha it is a bit funky. No I don't interlock. I overlap but there is still a small gap between my right ring finger and left index finger. I have actually been meaning to experiment with a 10 finger grip but haven't gotten there yet.

Bent over too much at address and also you are dropping your head during your backswing (not a Charles Barkeley head drop, but it's happenening).

  • 3 months later...

Here is an update from a little over a month ago. My main focus has been quieting my right foot in the transition and downswing. I am really trying to keep it flat through impact and have made some progress but have a long way to go. I am pretty conflicted about my inside takeaway and closed clubface. Keeping my right elbow on my hip in the backswing eliminates a transition move (tucking the elbow in, since it's already there) but is unsightly and makes me pretty one dimensional (straight/fade). Distance is not a concern. I have settled in to a happy place with my ballstriking and I think addressing the backswing/takeaway is my next big swing project. I don't know if or when I will undertake that; fundamental swing changes like that are a lot of work. I want to take some time to enjoy what I have built over the last year and re-evaluate after a few months.

like was said earlier, have to fix that inside take away. Once you move to full swing, you are probably going to start lifting from that and get into a bad spot on the downswing. Your right front bicep pit (by the elbow) is facing forward the whole time, try to work on it facing the sky a little bit and your arms will come up more and not suck back so much.

I love the way you are holding the right wrist impact and the leverage at impact, but fix that take away, shouldn't be too difficult.

Not bad, it would be interesting to see you transition from this to a full swing. However, I feel like your right knee is so high before impact that the club shaft is going to hit it on the way to the ball. I can't explain it, since I dont see an early extension, which is the usual culprit, but maybe it is because you are so squatted into it.
