Updated with new pics!! My modding of 2012 Newport 2 Notchback Scotty Cameron. Now updated with Cust

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

Just recently got my Scotty Cameron this week. I love the custom look everyone has so i decided to do it myself.

I got the putter from one of our members. Thanks again btw. After receiving it, I proceeded to cut it down to 33 inches. Originally it is 35. I also am changing out the grip. Still waiting for that in the mail. I also stripped all the paintfills / white lettering on the putter.

I'm waiting for the paint to come in the mail too. I just wanted to show everyone the progress so far. Especially since i haven't see anyone modify the new 2012 Scotty Cameron's yet. And here are pics.

Original

Stripped of all paint

I used Citristrip to remove all the paint. The colored sections were very easy. The parts that took the longest was the letters. I had to use a a toothpick to smear on the Citristrip and leave it for a few hours. Then use the toothpick to slowly get the white in the letters out.

Once I get all the items, New grip, Heavier weights (since I cut the putter), paint, I'll post new pics. Let me know if anyone has any questions. This forum has been super helpful in this process so far to prepare and initiate the project.

Please tell me you're going with black paintfill? That will look plain nasty (and nasty is good)
That would be cool. Just like the JVD / Jet Version they came out with last year. I am going the route of Blue Transparent on the paint fills and some letters. And white on other letters. If I dont like it or want to change, I simply can. :) Waiting for the paints... Any day now. haha.

are you going to use testors paint? i use just plain old nail polish. cant wait to see your pics when done...and black fill would look awesome...
Oh no. I'm going to use Tamiya Transparent Blue for my paintfill. For the letters, I'm going to try to place flat white on it first. Then put a blue coating on top. The reason why I'm doing this is the blue obviously will not pop or show on the black finish. With the white behind it, it'll make the blue bright. I hope. We'll see. waiting for the paints to come in. Any day now.

I would only fill the dots/weights in: with either a gloss solid black or a smoke transperant

Leave the rest empty. Looks good!

thanks!

The best thing about all this, even if I dont like it after i've painted it, I can just take it right off and start over. It seems like an eternity for the paint to arrive btw. HAHA.

Ok guys. Here it is. Please be gentle. It was my first time doing it. I got a little impatient on some of the parts / letters, so you can see some imperfections.

I tried this color scheme first. I love blue. The white add's some nice contrast. I wish the blue on Select and the two bars shows more like the paintfills. I'm also waiting on the 2012 30g weights to come in so i can paint to match the paintfill instead of the old 30g weights.

I also changed the grip to the Custom Scotty Black / Grey Mid Grip. I didn't like the original.

Would anyone have any suggestions on how to make the blue come out more against the black finish? I tried to put white under it as a base, then blue on top, but the white would start bleeding once in contact with the blue. That definitely is no good. Let me know you custom putter experts. Thanks in advance.

This was all made possible by the members that gave advice on how to do this. I wouldn't have even started it without their guidance. Thanks to you guys!

Enough rambling. Here are the pics. I used my iphone 4 cam. When I get better, i'll use my actual digital cam to take better pics. At least this hides the imperfections so I don't get criticized. hahaha.

I think I like the cherry bombs flat out metal....I think a pure silver grey and black would look nice...Great work buddy. I ordered a 2.6 recently and am gonna try some mods myself. Where do you get the citristrip? Is it any gentler than plain ol acetone or nail polish remover?
The Citristrip is obtainable at home depot. As for the strength of it, Acetone is definitely harsher / stronger. I use Non-Acetone solution in addition to the citristrip. It helps clean up any mistakes you make. I haven't seen it do anything to the black finish. Definitely play around with it. You can do anything to it once you have all the right materials.

My newly modded Scotty Cameron Headcover with Magnetic enclosure. I went to my parents house and asked my mother to see if she can do this. She's a seamstress btw. I took the magnets from the Odyssey Headcover I have and slapped it on the Scotty one. I also got this Scotty 2011 Sea Mist cover from the Custom Shop.

I'm thinking about "messing-around" with my 2012 Del Mar.

Has anyone found a safe way to stamp inside the "cherry dots" in the cavity w/o messing-up the face milling?

Or anyone know of a safe way to do this? Pics would be appreciated...

Also- Anyone have a brand/paint perfect match to Scotty's "clear-red" paint scheme

Sorry to TJ OP

Go ahead and try it. It doesn't hurt at all with changing the paint scheme. I believe the Transparent Red is closest match to the scotty red. I think you should just take off all the coloring and fill it in yourself.

As for stamping the cherry fills. I was thinking about that too, but its permanent. That might not be the best thing if you plan to sell or give your putter away. I was thinking of getting vinyl letters or some type of solid small letter that can fit in that cherry fill. Stick it on and drop the paint into the fill. By that, you can always take that letter off and you can see it easily through the transparent paint fill. If i plan / try that. i'll post it up if its a success or not. Good luck!

Take a piece of an old thick leather belt and place it between the face and the anvil portion of the vice. This cushions the milling to prevent marring it.

Tamiya X-acrylic translucent red is your color.

OP, to get the blue to pop (assuming its translucent Tamiya as well), put down a base coat of silver enamel model paint and let it dry completely. Then flow your translucent blue into it after that. The enamel won't break down with the Tamiya acrylic. I like model masters enamel.

I don't want to mess it up... I think I'm gonna stamp my kids intials: Clara and Blake, so I will stamp: "C" "&" "B"

i know this is an older post but did you let the white base layer completely dry before doing the blue layer? the base layer has to be bone dry before you can paint on top of it or it will bleed.

Looks Great! I wish I had steady enough hands and the patience to do something like that! Colors look perfect with the black and I like the magnetic cover idea! One day Scotty will head the same direction!

Looks great! What did you use to apply the new paint? I ask because I've tried everything from Tamiya model brushes to q-tips to the tiny model swabs I found at the craft store and I still get tiny air bubbles in the paint.

Try a needle point applicator bottle that are available at most hobby stores. Here is a link to an example: http://www.hobbymasters.com/a-west-stainless-needle-point-applicator-bottle.aspx

I might be skimming here, but I am getting a Golo Select here in a couple weeks. Planning on doing some mods to it. I have done several paintfills, but im nervous about this one because...
1) The cherry dots and weights. How do you make it look transparent like the original red? Im planning on doing a "murdered" paint schme. Thinking a dark grey or black on the weights and dots. Then a little white on the letters.
2) I normally use Acetone and im worried about hurting the black finish.
3) This will be the most expensive putter i've filled. I've done a couple putter including a Newport Detour 2, a Bettinardi BB-27, and a couple PING putter. But this one, if i jack it up, wioll be a $300+ mistake lol.

Any info on where to get some transparent black, white, and or grey paint would be appreciated.
