How to remove a putter head from shaft?

I'm about to send my putter into the custom shop and I need to remove the head. Does anyone know how to safely do this? I think I've read before to heat the hosel so the epoxy melts, then just yank out. If anyone has better knowledge on the subject please let me know. Thanks

You can use a heat gun to heat up the hosel and put your shoed foot on the head and pull up on the shaft. Or if you have stove top that uses gas take the tray off and hold the hosel over the flame and pull it off just like above.

Sweet. I used a candle. Set the connection part over the candle had it sit for several minutes. Then twist. Wam bam thank you mam.

IF YOU DON'T WANT TO MESS WITH FLAMES JUSTSTICK THE HEAD IN A PAN OF BOILING WATER.

5 MIN OR SO DONE. JUST MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A GLOVE OR TOWEL THE HEAD WILL BEEEE HOT!

Do what I did - cut the shaft near the bottom with a hacksaw and send it in to the Custom Shop with a couple of inches of the shaft left in.

 

Let the guys in the Custom Shop do it without you worrying about doing anything wrong.

I just removed mine with the stove top method.

 

Any recommendations on removing the epoxy from inside the hosel? I plan on epoxying a new shaft in myself. Never done it before.

A heat gun is a good option if you are going to continue to remove shafts from time to time. Under $30 at Home Depot. It's best to use the low setting and be patient, especially for graphite shafts. You should be able to remove any remaining excess epoxy by just scraping it out with the small blade of a pocket knife. Or use a Dremel tool with a small wire brush.

Surprised no one has mentioned this, but I use a propane torch. 30 seconds of heat, a quick twist and it's off.

I just swapped a couple putter shafts. Used one of those small propane tank torches. About 5 seconds in the flame, grab the putter head with a towel, pull and twist....usually breaks free. It really doesn't take much heat to get this done.

It's tough to explain the smell though

Graphite is a whole different animal.
For graphite you need a shaft puller that pushes the head off. Any twisting of hot graphite and you have mush.

You can also get wire hosel brushes from Golfworks. They come in different diameters to fit a variety of hosel sizes.
