Stan Thompson Ginty Woods, Wilson Staff Tour Blades

Recommended Posts

I am 65 years old, and I have not broken 80 in 40 years.

Tomorrow I am returning to my roots, literally.

My five rounds this year have been 92, 95, 94, 98, 99.

In the morning, I am bagging my Stan Thompson Ginty 3W & 5W, as well

as my Wilson Staff FG-51 Tour blades.

The Ginty's are shafted with TT Dynalite steel shafts, L-Flex, C7 swingweight.

The FG-51 Tour blades are shafted with Firestick 2.8 steel shafts, S-Flex...I think they are

the same as Dynamic Gold S300.

I am going to use the 3W from the tee on the 13 par 4's & 5's. The 5W will be my fairway club

on the par 5's.

I intend to break 90, or bust!

So how'd ya do?

The Ginty is one of the all time great fairway wood designs.

Well, had my best round of the year, shot 45-45=90, with 36 putts.

The FG-51 Tour blades are fantastic,

I confess I chickened out, did not play the Ginty's.

Used my Malby Distance Master Steel Pro 3W,5W,7W...shafted with Dyamic R-Flex steel shafts, no driver.

Hit 8 of 13 fairways, none of my 5 misses were off by more than a couple of yards.

Had a breakthrough in my putting, four 3-putts were offset by four 1-putts on the back nine.

I expect to have fewer putts next week, intend to break 90.

79 is in sight, expect to do it this season.

Awesome, give the ginty's a shot though, at least one should be in the bag....sounds like you just need to work on the short game, getting up and down will get you to 79 quicker than anything.

Well done!

You're finding out what a lot of us here have found out. The ball has no idea what's hitting it, and that modern gear is overrated, especially when it comes to your score.

Agree with dlygrisse. You are going to be very pleasantly surprised by those Gintys. Superior weight distribution to anything made of metal. I'd be very surprised if you lost a yard of distance and you may find that you hit them further than your metalwoods. That weight distribution seems to give that "high launch low spin" dynamic that everyone is searching for.

Well, reality strikes.

Today I shot 45-47=92 with 35 putts, 1 penalty stroke.

I hit 8/13 fairways, using a Titleist 975J Driver with a 50 gram R-Flex graphite shaft.

I only carried my drives 200 yards.

I hit 3 GIR's.

My body hurts, and I am totally exhausted...a little bit discouraged.

Conclusions:

I hit several satisfactory 3-iron shots, and a few great 4-iron shots with the heavy, S-flex blades...but I tired badly.

It is time to put my ego aside...I need lighter shafts, and a senior flex.

Next week I am going to bag game improvement irons, and my Ginty 2W from the tee, 3W from the fairway. These are L-flex, C-7 swingweight.
