Looking for some driver shaft advice

Recommended Posts

I currently play an r11 8* driver with either an aldila RIP stiff flex or a House of Forged XX shaft (kind of a crazy shaft gap, but I swing 126+ and I was trying to slow down my SS). I was thinking of trying the graphite design tour AD DI 7or 8x, or an HD6 because I've heard good things about these shafts. My miss is usually a push and I'm not really sure what I'm looking for in a shaft, just something that feels good has low flight and lowers my back spin. Anyone have any experience with these shafts or any advice?

AD DI7x is a great shaft. I tried it on trackman and it was like the first time I tried a Speeder 757 after playing a NV for a season, very noticeable difference with numbers to verify.

I have an HD6 and it didn't do it for me

You can look into xcaliber tour shafts.

Excellent shaft, nice price to go with it.

Thanks for the recommendation AC! I just looked at the zone stiffness profiles of the shafts you're considering. The lower 16-20" of the GD shaft is indeed on the stiff side, but not even close to the XCaliber T6+ TS-flex (870 cpm vs. 980cpm). You didn't specify which H. of Forged but generally they are above 900 cpm. If you'd like an independent rev., go to: NOT ALLOWED

Hope this helps and excuse me for butting in....but I truly like to help folks with their games...

 • 2 weeks later...

I have both the Matrix HD6 in a X and the Graphite Design Tour AD-DI 7X I go back and forth with for my Callaway Razr Fit 8.5 driver head.
Graphite Design Tour AD-DI 7X
On trackman the numbers were a direct translation of what I thought I was getting, meaning when I swung at 110 mph my ball speed was right near 165 mph, my spin was 2400-2850 approx and my distance was approx 285-295 carry with good roll. This was done outside, on a flat range and in 75-80 degree weather with very little wind. When playing rounds I saw the same thing in terms of distance, accuracy and ball flight was mid-high depending on what I was trying to do off of the tee. What blew me away was the accuracy and consistency, not so much the distance. I prefer the kick in this shaft because it was a mid kick and for my swing I felt like I was loading the shaft big time even when I wasnt swinging out of my shoes.

Matrix HD6-X
This shaft was lighter but overall stiffer in the hands and swing. Ball flight was lower and had some more roll to it when it landed which I think had to do with the spin rate and overall profile of the shaft in general. I didnt have trackman #'s to show for on this shaft but I will tell you that it performed just as good as the GD Tour AD, the ball flight, roll and distance were slightly different as expected BUT the results were the same which for me was: In the fairway, very long & consistent.

I have had 3 House Of Forged Shafts: The HD Tour Spec-3 Wood, The Great White Shaft-Driver & The Jamie Sadlowski Hybrid Shaft. Theses shafts are still an experiment for me and I have not had any trackman #'s to compare them but I will say when swung correctly they are extremely long. These shafts are made by Matrix and then HOF does a multi-step process which completes the shaft. When buying its not a matter of Stiff, X or Regular. It's based on CPM's so you really have to know your swing speed, tempo and how you load the shaft to determine what the best flex is and Robert can help you determine which CPM you would be in. I think the higher the CPM's, the stiffer the profile is. I think their shafts are awesome but I dont think I'm in the right CPM as well as the bend point. Like I said I prefer a mid kick so it would be a matter of having a personal discussion with Robert Kent-Owenr of House Of Forged to really nail down the specifics.

Hey Again -
The XCaliber Tour T6+s are definitely in your wheelhouse. You've gone from 125 mph...to 110...that's quite a difference.

So I'd say if you swing at 110mph, go S-flex (butt freq around 255-257 at 46" and 11" freq at 960 cpm....STIFFEST lower shaft section out there except maybe some of the long drive shafts all of which I have not checked...); at 125, def. go w/ the TS-flex (butt freq around 265 at 46" and 11" freq at 980 to over 1000 cpm).

Good luck.

A C, I see that the XCaliber Tour Wood 6+ shaft shows a torque spec of 2.8*. Any idea if this is accurate or not? Yes, I realize that torque doesn't seem to matter to many in this forum, but I am not one of those people. :glare:

Hey BT -
Thanks for the post. All I can say is that I've set the factory up to measure the torque of the XCalibers with exactly the same protocol as I used while at Grafalloy when I was building that company in the '90s. There are ZERO standards for this measurement and to get a "lower" torsional reading, one simply has to shorten the "beam length" or distance between the butt clamp and tip clamp. Still, you should know that that reading is similar to saying , "it's an S-flex...". Again there are no standards in the industry for component offerings so company A's S-flex may be entirely different than Company B's. To compound further, this can also change w/in the SAME company when the weight is lowered...AND the OEMs compound the issue even further as they tend to use r-flexes as their s-flexes....and on and on. But the essence of torque, and esp. stiffness, is this....how is it DISTRIBUTED throughout the length of a shaft? THAT defines performance attributes...a the summation of all that distribution as it's simply measured from the tip (torque) or butt (stiffness) ends. Hope this makes sense.

Thanks again for the post and hopefully support!!!
Robin
