MetalX from Caswell... Destroyer of SC Platinum! PICS (8/31)!

Recommended Posts

Looking to take off the Pro Platinum finish off a Newport... I have scoured threads here looking for insight, but still have a couple of questions...

First, does it work well?

Second, does exact temp matter? Like if I am above the range will it diminish the effect? And what did you use for getting a temp right? Hot plate? Old crock pot? Candle Warmer?

Lastly, does something work better (other than finding an electro chemical plating place to reverse the process...)?

Any help is appreciated!!

This is the stuff I was referring to...

You only need slight amounts of heat (120-150 degrees F) to remove nickel plating. It was mentioned in a few posts, but, from what I read, it was posts from people looking to use it...

If it works like stated and the SC Pro Platinum is a nickel based finish, it should remove the plating fairly quickly with minimal fumes and not corrode the underlying carbon steel.

Give it a shot, you could start a new trend on GolfWRX, if it works.

I have used Caswell's MetalX to remove the Pro Platinum finish from a Scotty putter. It's a very easy DIY job. The only thing you need to do is keep an eye on the temperature. You don't want it to reach a boil. It's best to have a cooking thermometer in there the monitor the temp.

The only thing that kind of sucks is that it you have to keep it in the MetalX solution for about 4 hours to completely remove the finish. Also, it helps to agitate the putter head every so often. You can actually see the Pro Platinum sediment come off of the putter head.

It does not affect the underlying carbon steel at all. It also does not produce an noxious fumes. The job can be done on your kitchen stove if you want. It very effective stuff and an easy DIY job if you have a little patience. With the bare carbon steel, it opens up all sorts of options.

If you need some nickel plating or "Pro Platinum" removed, look no further.

How easy was it? While mowing the lawn on a hot day last week, I mixed up half a gallon of MetalX B-9 solution in an old clear plastic container and let it sit in the bed of my truck in full sun. I used warm water to mix it and removed all the paint prior.

After I dropped the head in, it immediately turned black. I used a wire bristle brush and scrubbed it a little, then went back to yard work. When I was near, I would scrub it or give a good stir (directions say to agitate). After a few hours of sitting out, the finish is all gone...

Product is as described, no fumes.

Just beautiful bare carbon steel ready for a light sanding and sandblasting, then a dip in the Caswell black...

...and my phone is acting screwy, so no pics just yet.

Interesting really want to see some pics.

Though much is taken much abides;
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

For all of you who asked...PICS!

I hit it with a quick layer of Black Oxide (it will be getting redone later...) to illustrate the LACK of plating.

On the pic of the sole, you can look closely and you can see a few spots inside the letters where a tiny flake of something is still visible. I say this because there were approx 3-4 pin head sized spots that looked like nickel, but, when I redipped them, nothing happened. If it were nickel it would have turned black like the rest of the coating, but a quick swipe with some 600 grit paper took care of them.

Putter looks awesome.

I am hoping to strip my Pro Platinum mil-spec Newport this offseason and give it a custom look. Really glad I saw this post.

How much weight did you lose with the finish being removed?

Hebron,
A. your blog & work are amazing. Very informative and insightful.
B. Would you recommend (or would anyone else), fixing the topline and removing dings, scratches, etc. before removing the finish or after?

Sorry if any of these questions are dumb, never worked on a putter before....

sorry i didn't see this before now. to answer your question, i would definitely wait until after the plating is removed. there's no reason to fight the plating if you don't have to.

maybe a stupid question.. would this work on a charcoal mist circa?
I got my metal-x today and I'm gonna try it on my charcoal mist circa this weekend....I'll post some results then...if there are any

Metal-X does work on the charcoal mist finish as well. Here are a few progression pics.....

Short story...I had already worked on buffing out some of the nicks on the putter before starting. Pic 2 is what the putter looked like only after 1 hour indoors (after stripping). Pics 3&4 are my end result (after stripping finish and then torching & oiling 3 times. I know its not perfect....but not bad for my gamer.

Bag: currently under construction
