WITB Tiger as an Amatuer/1st professional events

We had two pros from Isleworth play our course a few years back and one of the guys had a 975D that Tiger had given to him. It had a 7.0 Rifle shaft in it and the head shape was completely different than a traditional 975D.

 

The other pro had a set of Taylormade Burner tour irons that O'Meara had given to him. They were sweet as well.

 

But, I will never forget that driver.

This thread is interesting indeed.

 

The Fact is that Tiger Woods is going to get what Tiger Woods wants. I would think that when he got his 1st club endorsement contract he handed or his dad handed Titleist his Mizuno's and said here make 1 dozen sets of these and call them Titleist Proto-types and show me the money.

 

Then Nike did the same... I don't recall seeing Duvall and everyone else playing the Titleist Irons Tiger was playing.

 

 

Let's not even get into Nike Golf balls and the rest. Nike has enough money to either Hire the best or buy the best and brand it to compete with anyone in the golf industry. Hell when they 1st made golf shoes they we crap and that was the business you would have expected them to excel.

 

Nike has leaped near the top of the Club count very fast and it just shows me they have deep pockets and can pay as many or more players then Taylor Made or Callaway.

 

Tiger is the man but it don't mean Nike get's my money because he plays or kinda plays their equipment. :man_in_love:

Doesn't anybody think it's possible that he loved the Mizuno's but Nike was given specs and then they were stamped with a swoosh? The truth is that no one will ever be able to buy the clubs that Tiger uses. His will always be made to exact specs he wants. As for him not being able to play other clubs I thought it was in his contract with Nike that if he found a club he liked better then he could play it. He wears their clothes, shoes, and plays their ball. I'm sure that regardless of whether the clubs are stamped or not, Nike is glad to have him on their team. Other players may have contracts that severely limit what they can play but I'm sure that Tiger has plenty of sway built into his contract so that he can play what he thinks he can win with

This reply is long over due, in fact it's almost funny in the sense that everyone that has responded on this thread takes their opinion and calls it "fact", and it's not even on the correct subject! Lol This was a thread about what he used to play when he was an amatuer. But I feel I must clarify the facts of what Tiger plays now just to get back on the right subject.

 

First things first, my credibility: My wife. She has worked for Nike under Tom Stites for years and we are good friends with him. Second, I have personally observed Nike's Team build by hand "Tigers Clubs". Third, I have seen Tiger hitting the exact clubs that Nike built him and then tell the Nike Team any modifications on the sets.

 

So, to answer any and all questions about what clubs Tiger hits or who makes them or any other obscure opinions, here goes: Tiger Woods plays NIKE golf clubs, not "stamped" golf clubs by any other company. By the way, Tom Stites has NEVER worked for Mizuno... EVER. Tiger is the only player that has his clubs built from scratch. And Tom Stites and his team work very hard to make the clubs that Tiger plays today. He would not jeopardize his multi-billion dollar company for that. End of story. Hope I clarified any questions about the wrong subject on this thread.

What they pay Stites is nothing compared to what they've made off Tiger. They would with out a doubt stamp a swoosh on a Mizuno rip off to keep him happy. They did the same thing for Pete Sampras when every shoe they made him blistered his feet they knocked off and old Wilson shoe!

Why does everyone give Mizuno so much credit? As if they're the only company on the face of the earth capable of making a golf club. (This is not a question I want an answer to, and to answer your questions, yes, I used to play MP33s.)

I love Mizuno.

 

Mizuno is the best iron manufacturer in the world....however that is it and other clubs in the bag are better made by other manufacturers.

Nike says he can play any other clubs he wants but he gets a percentage of club sales and it would actually cost him money to switch with the exception of his putter which if he played a nike putter scotty would go out of buisness and everyone would be special ordering cool nike one offs and strange colored grips and headcovers...yea i play a scotty which makes me a sheep as well bahhhhhhhhhhhh

The first bag shot is apparently from May 1998. He's carrying prototype Titleist irons (which may or may not have been christened '841s') and some of the first (that I'd seen) Vokey wedges. I had a good look in his bag at that years' Open Championship a couple of months later and the only changes were a Titleist 2 iron had replaced the old MP29, the driver was graphite-shafted and he was using Mark O'Meara's back-up Anser 2.

The second bag shot is from around the time of his first Masters win. The putter shots will no doubt have Cameron afficianados wincing.
