Slightergolf milling

Recommended Posts

Im sending in my Scotty Cameron Studio Stainless Newport 2 for refinishing, custom paintfill, and mill work. Slightergolf offers three milling options for your putter. Deep mill work, medium, and soft. I am looking to achieve the same mill work that Tiger Wood's old Scotty Cameron used to have. Would that be medium or soft by slightergolf? Ive looked at his pictures on his website and am having trouble which to choose. If anyone could please point me in a direction and offer there opinions I would appreciate it.

Make it a million and one. He'll know best and I'm sure he won't mind the questions.

Yeah your best bet is to just ask Tom.

If I remember correctly, Woods' GSS had a light, but decernible milling pattern on the face when he first began using it. I'm assuming it was refinished by Cameron at least once during it's days as Woods' gamer because more recent pics show a nearly plain face.

Thanks for the details. I talked to him and he said he can do something along those lines. I want some mill work done just to get the ball rolling off the face a bit quicker.

Face milling has nothing to do with quicker roll.
then what is the point of milling?

Looks, to affect the sound, to affect the feel.

If you want a "quicker roll" lowering the loft would be the quick fix. Correct loft, lie, and putting technique will make a better roll, not face milling patterns.

Does milling make it softer? Honestly im a 4 handicap and still feel im not good at telling wether or not the ball is coming off the putter quick or not...IMHO I love the look of the putter and the feel. A buddy of mine had it and I used it maybe a half dozen times when we practiced in college. I instantly bought one for the feel because Ive never felt such a soft putter that looked good and works.

More times than not, yes a deep milled pattern on the face mutes the sound and softens the feel. There are many things that determine a putter's sound and feel, and IMO, a putter's face thickness is probably the biggest factor. All other things being equal, a thick face with no deep milling will probably play softer than a deep milled but thin face.

Although I've never sent anything to Slighter, from what others have posted about him he seems like a great guy to work with. Just tell him what you're trying to accomplish with the looks, sound and feel and I'm sure he can make it happen.

Like Scotty1140 said, deep milling can produce a softer feel and muted sound. I had Slighter mill a Bettinardi for me a couple years ago and it made the feel very soft.

That looks about what Im trying to accomplish. Not too deep but yet visible and very good looking. How thick is the face of your putter? Compared to my studio stainless would you say thicker or thinner. I will probably send him that picture that looks sweet. Also thats what I want my initials to look like on the toe.

I think the Studio Stainless is probably just a tad thicker. Slighter's milling process doesn't take much weight off at all. Less than you'd think. My putter went from 340 grams to 338.

Honestly Im a broke 20 year old using what I bought in highschool. Im going back to school this fall and looking to walk onto a D2 golf team in SE Wisconsin. I have never paid attention to swing weight. I've just thrown a couple pieces of lead tape on the bottom of the putter and just gone by feel. I plan to get more serious though and get fit for my putter once its refinished and what not. Also I'm planning to get fit for some new irons Ive been saving up for. Most likely the MP 59's 64's or AP 2's....well see what happens in a month or two when the swing is in order and I make an appointment to get fit. I should have a nice WITB pic by May hahaha

Just to +1 everything everyone has said about Tom- he is amazing. However, I will caution- not cheap (just referring to your comments about being a broke 20 year old).
Yeah Ive been needing to get my putter refinished for over a year now and he quoted me a couple bucks less than the scotty shop so I think I will splurge a little on this purchase =]
