A bit confused by the posts of those who are constantly adjusting the heads or alluding that this is in some way the intended use. Once you have found the setting that works best for you, no need to adjust any further. Haven't touched mine except for when the pics were taken in this post.

I change mine sometimes depending on the conditions that day or the course I am playing. In general the course I play at most often provides little roll so I have the driver set for higher loft to maximize the carry. If it is windy or I am playing some course that has firm fairways I may lower the loft some. It's easier then changing ball position or the basic swing.

What I don't understand is those who say they can't line up the shot with the face square to the intended starting direction. How in the world do they ever start and iron or putt down the desired line?

In the days when drivers had only one bend, heel to toe in the soleplate (approximately a 6 inch radius if I remember correctly) you could measure the loft accurately with a simple protractor. The component companies actually sold fixed angle protractors with various lofts angles. I still have one.

The advent of multidimensional sole curves in drivers eliminated the protractors and for all practical purposes the standard loft lie gage as a repeatable method of measuring loft or lie for that matter since the place to have the sole contacting the measurement base is undefined and easily screwed up.

The only repeatable method to measure loft is at 0 face angle for which all high class lot/lie gages provide an alignment aid. This is BTW exactly what you do when measuring iron lofts. Even high class bending machines do essentially the same thing by clamping the face 90 degrees from horizontal and measuring the shaft angle.

The loft of a club was never specified relative to the sole. It was always relative to the shaft when the shaft is in a plane 90 degrees to the base of the instrument. It is no different for measuring irons except that even with sole radius front to back and fore and aft it is relatively easy to find a sole contact point since the sole is rather narrow even in GI iron head designs. It does get a little touchy with wide soled wedges.

You could get away with using the sole as a reference when the soles were either flat or bent in only one direction.

Those days have been gone forever. For those who insist on doing the same old stuff be sure to play your 8 track while doing the measurement.

Solid post!!

Below is another copy of the Titleist Surefit chart. Check out the asterisk noted at the bottom.

Just in case you meant me, I tried to explain it as clear as I could. I do not CONSTANTLY adjust the clubhead. I adjust the loft depending on the course and conditions. I NEVER use lofts that result in a closed FA cause I don't like it. Anything open is fair game though. I fail to see why you think this was not one of the intended uses? If I square the clubface on my shots, then the only change I have made is the trajectory of the shot. I also explained why I use the two drivers that I use. BTW, just ordered an Amp Cell Pro and believe it will allow me to do everything I need to do with one club. We will see.

"By far, the vast majority of golfers, even the majority of tour pros,
set the driver down to rest on its sole when they address the ball to
hit a tee shot, and leave the driver sitting on its sole when they start
the swing to hit the shot. "

I don't think this is true at all.

I would agree with you. Who doesn't hover their driver? Almost no one drags it back along the ground.

IMO the relationship between the shaft and the face is what is important, not the sole and the face when talking about drivers. Loft at impact is what matters, not loft in a measuring fixture.

The adjustable clubs were made to reduce SKU's and inventory, no doubt. But they do work to some degree.

I can't decide what is worse. The OEM marketing machine or the "high end" fitters. Both are pretty much full of it.

It's not a matter of whether or not they rest it on the ground, it's whether they rest it on the ground IN ORDER TO TAKE THEIR GRIP!! If the golfer takes his/her grip before resting the club on the ground, then resting it on the ground has no affect at all. I rest the clubhead on the ground prior to take-away, but it has no influence on the flight of the ball at all.
