Tiger Career Score

Recommended Posts

So I just found out this interesting bit of inormation via Shane Bacon on twitter.

Tiger is currently sitting at -1988 for his PGA career. I have no idea how that stacks up to any of the other golf greats, but that seems pretty wild.

What I also found interesting is that the only major he is NOT under par in for his career, is the Open (+80).

Here is a snapshot of his scores (by year):

The 2000 year is even more SICK when you break it down!! I would be willing to bet that this is by far and away the greatest season of golf ever played! The bar was set EXTREMELY high during this season!

# of events played on PGA Tour 20

Average score in those 20 events -13

14 events he was double digits under par

3 events he was -20 or better

For all four majors he was -53 (-4 Masters, -12 US Open, -19 Open Championship, & -18 PGA Championship)

Worst finish in relation to par was -4 (Masters T5)

Best finsih in relation to par was -23 (Disney)

9 Total wins in 20 events (45% win ratio)

Only finished outside the 20 once (Western Open T23 @ -7)

Only finished outside the top 5 three times (Western Open T23 @-7, Nissan Open T18 @-5, Buick Open T11 @-13)

17 Finishes inside of the Top 5 (85% of the time)

Four second place finishes ( Buick Inv, Accenture Match Play, Players Championship, Tour Championship)

That is absolutley amazing. Really wish I would have been into golf like I am now so I could have said I watched all of that. I knew who tiger was and how good he was but never really watched it on tv

Forever Changing at this point.......

+80 at the US Open is nowhere near as bad as it sounds, divide that by the 17 years he's played the tournament and you average +4.7. Now consider that the average winning score for this period was only -1.88 and the stroke difference is 6.58. Now consider that the winning average for the Masters during that same timeframe was -10.63 and Tiger -4.42 and the stroke difference is 6.21, in other words very similar.

I don't know what bothers me the most.
The fact that you've sat down to work that out, or the fact that you've probably got those stats tattooed on your arm.

Here are the total stats for Woods in 2000 for those who do not remember, too young, or did not follow golf back then. If anyone on tour had a year 1/2 as good as this one with the wins, top 10s, and these stats, dare I say HOF lock just off this one year????

Don't have all of the stats, and a quick google search didn't turn up the answer....
But if you assume an average par of 71.5 (since some are 70 & 71, but most 72) during Jack's day from 1962-1980, Jack is in the neighborhood of -1500 over that time span. And if you assume an average par of 71.25 he's around -1150.
So now how do you evaluate GOAT? Career score? Major total? Overall PGA wins?

If you compare up to age 38 between Tiger and Jack, it's hard to say. I know the equipment is different, the courses are different, the field is different. It's difficult to compare today's golfer to the golfer of the 60's & 70's, unlike horse racing. (Secretariat will always be Secretariat!!! And he ran the same track.)
I will say that Tiger lapping the field in his Masters victory and US Open win at Pebble may be the two most impressive wins of all time. Him finishing top 5 in 17 of 20 events in 2000 is ridiculous.

I didn't really get to watch Jack in his hayday; only really remember the '86 Masters. But having watched Tiger, he was a force that made everyone shake in the shoes when he showed up. Heck, even this year he has 4 wins ALREADY. If Tiger continues his trend until he's 50+, to me there's no doubt. If Tiger quit tomorrow, it would be a great debate.

Not hard at all. Tiger still has 7 months to go before he's 38, but here is the comparison up to Jack's 38th birthday:

Majors -- Jack 14, Tiger 14
PGA Wins --- Jack 64, Tiger 78
Vardon Trophies* --- Jack 0, Tiger 8
Money Titles --- Jack 8, Tiger 9
Player of the Year** --- Jack 5, Tiger 10

Note that Tiger is on track to add to all of those numbers before he turns 38, but they include all of the scoring titles (official and unofficial), money titles, and POTYs that Jack won in his entire career.

* Due to PGA rules of the time, Jack was not eligible for the Vardon in 1964-5, when he had the lowest scoring average.
He was eligible in 1971-76, when he also claims he had the lowest average, but he chose not to play the minimum number of rounds, so that's on him. His limited schedule gave him more time to scout and practice at the major venues, giving him an advantage over most of the field. Palmer, Casper, and Trevino all won multiple Vardons under the same rules, so the minimum was not unreasonable for a top player.

But, if you want to ignore the minimum rounds and just go by scoring average, then Jack had the lowest average 8 times, and Tiger had it 11 times. Tiger didn't play the minimum rounds in 1996, 2006, and 2008.

** It is NOT true, as commonly claimed, that Jack was also ineligible for Player of the Year his first five years. He just didn't win it. I'll concede that they had different standards then, and IMO Jack had better years than Julius Boros, who won in 63, Ken Venturi, who won in 64, and Dave Marr, who won in 65. But IMO 1965 was the only one of his first five years that Jack deserved to win. Arnie had a better year in 62 and 63, Lema in 64, and Casper in 66.

Take the *'s away. Looking at this, are you saying that it's hands down, no-brainer??? Granted, Tiger has the ability to add 3 to the first, several to the second, and one to the last category. But, if you look at that way, and given everything else, the sniff test makes it a close race.

I believe that Tiger's 2000 season is the GOAT.
I believe him coming "back" from hydrant-gate is truly impressive.
I also believe he's playing in a different sandbox and is focused differently.

Impressive is an understatement really - the 2000 season is noteworthy and sticks out a mile. However, stats being stats - his US Open record is +80 and he finished under par in only 3 of 17 starts. You could post his Ryder Cup career too, but the fanboys would call me a hater - which I'm not.
Whether that is good or bad would depend on how that compares to other players. Regardless, he has played well enough to bag 3 US Open titles.
