Scotty Cameron Big Sur S Modified

Hey Guys

First attempt at a post on GolfWRX... Lets see how it goes

Iv been really interested in the new high balance point putters by odyssey and TM. Been playing around with the Daddy Long legs in the proshop a bit. Really like it.

However I am a Scotty fan and found a Big Sur S on the second hand shelf for R1500.00 (about $150)

I first cut it down to 33inch with a superstroke grip on it. Had to put a brass weight in the top of the shaft to get the same balance point as the TM. Liked it alot but it wasnt as stable as i would like. So i made it 36inch with a 17inch winn grip on. Didnt have to counter balance it with a brass weight and worked out to the same balance point as the Daddy Long legs.

Its a little on the heavy side but well balanced! Had to bend it quite alot flatter and the shaft ended up bending a bit.

Any comments or improvements would be appreciated

I was thinking of doing the same with mine but was a little scared of not being able to bend the putter. Did you have any difficulties with replacing the grip on the cut down shaft? That was another fear of mine that I would cut down the shaft and then the grip wouldn't be flush with the shaft on the non-butt end.

I don't think you have to worry about getting the grip over the putter shaft. IIRC when I added length to my kombi-S I noticed that the grip at the tip (closes to the mallet head) was tapered so i had to add tape to make it flush.

I'm sure any golf shop can bend the putter for you with a small fee attached. It is just a shaft like your irons.

It was a 49inch long.

There was no problem with the bending, i just bent it on a normal lie and loft machine.

The only problem i have is that the head is very heavy, so you need the length to counter balance it.

Any ideas on making the head lighter other than changing the 20g weights?

And no problem with the grip, the shaft is pretty think the longer you go, so grips fit nice and snug

I'm not even sure if counter balancing will do much because of small swing arc. Large arcs with drivers and such the counterbalance will make a difference in feel but such a small putting stroke, the counter balance may just add more weight. Switching weights may be your only options. Maybe even taken them out and covering the spot with cotton and lead tape.

Post a picture of the bottom. If it has the weighted plate, you should be able to remove and some have little weights inside you can take out. May have to heat plate with a heat gun to remove. I plan on cutting a Kombi that is on the way to use like a Kuchar style putter. Thanks for the info on bending though. I was a little worried about bending it almost 8*

Iv tried to remove the bottom, but the screws are stripped. Problem of a second hand club.

Iv just read another member doing the same conversion saying the plate weight 210g so theres alot to grind off.

Adding a counter balance adds weight to the top of the putter which gives it a hight MOI, doesnt feel as head heavy.

My main goal was to get the balance point high like the Daddy Long legs and the TANK. Hence the longer grip. Feels great and i can recommend to conversion to scotty fans before buying a Daddy Long Legs or TANK!!

I think its a percentage of the club. For example the 38inch point will be hight than the 35inch if that makes sense?

My Big Sur is 36inch and the balance point is 23cm from the ground. This is matched from a DLL

Depending on your head weight and length you might have to add weight on either side.

I dont know the science behind it. I just held it on my finger and saw where it balanced.

Hope that helps?

  • 1 year later...

What was the weight of the brass plug you put in?

Looking to counterbalance my Big Sur, and was wondering how much you put in.

Thanks.

I had a Kombi long converted to a 37" CB. The heads weigh 500 grams. Typical CB heads weigh 380-400 I believe. The base plate of my Kombi was a solid chunk of steel. I had the builder cut out about 50 grams of it, then removed the 25 gram weights. I imagine the Big Sur plate is similar. It's pretty dang hefty. It's gonna be tough to remove a significant amount of weight without removing it.

Quick update, just modified my 35" Sur by changing to a heavier SS slim 1.0 21" grip, and added a 80 gram butt plug to counterbalance.

Trying it out on Friday. Will get back with the results.

How did you get the plate removed? I removed the screws but can't seem to get the plate to budge. is there a trick you used? I tried heat gun but don't know how to get it out of there. Thoughts?

I did something similar with a Studio Style Newport MID and it turned out really well.

Putter was converted from original 43" Mid to 38" Counter Balanced. Original weighting was maintained (within 2g).

Since the Studio Style Newport Mid model is 40 grams heavier (370 grams) than the standard Studio Style Newport model (330 grams), it makes it an ideal candidate for conversion to counter balance. It is also a better look for those who prefer the plumbers neck to the single bend neck currently available in the Scotty Cameron Select Newport 2 Dual Balance model.

1. Removed original grip, weight 140 grams

2. Removed 5" from butt of shaft, weight 30 grams

3. Installed Golf Works Lead Putter Counterweight, 40 grams

4. Installed Scotty Cameron Dual Balance Grip, weight 128 grams
