In a good golf swing, gravity, momentum, centrifugal force, and the forward kick of the shaft will all combine through release and impact creating an action that is similar to cracking a whip, but not exactly the same. One difference is that in cracking a whip there is some pull back. In the golf swing, there is simply a slowing of the pivot at the right time to allow the whip like action to happen. The hands and arms are not entirely passive in this. Good extension must be maintained and the clubface must be rotated to the desired impact position. The hands can also add to the clubhead speed, but trying to do that without perfect timing with the natural forces would be disastrous.

Huh? Think of the mechanics of cracking a whip. That's not possible with a golf swing, at least not with good results. I'd rather someone think of the club as an inflexible rod than a whip.

Very faulty analogy. Skimming a stone perhaps.

That's only because of the camera. Not saying shaft doesn't bend, but don't think it's anywhere near what people think. Love to see some high speed video of this, haven't found a good example.

Hips slow down towards impact. Look at slow mo videos of Rory for a good example. If you look at some of the kinematic sequence charts it is also clear that the hips slow down.

Now what isn't clear is if this is something you remotely need to think about or does it just happen do the way your body is setup. I tend to lean towards the camp that says this is something that just happens when you get everything else set up properly

Hmmm , I always thought slowing the hips down was referred to as a pivot stall and to be avoided at all costs??

So basically good sequencing. Same for throwing a ball, swinging a bat, throwing a javelin, swinging a tennis racket...... athletically they have similarities to a golf swing, much more so than cracking a whip IMO (though I get the analogy, just feel it obfuscates in a practical sense). Just get an expert whipper (hehe) and an excellent tennis/baseball player who have never played golf before...... odds are the whip master extraordinaire will progress much slower.
