They don't stop a hockey game (or any other sport) 2 periods later and call a penalty or a goal back. Some of golfs rules need to be looked at and a rules official with every player apparently.....

Jealous caddies are as bad as TV viewers calling in apparently....

Correct penalty was applied. Doesn't matter who spotted it.

Caddie probably didn't want to say it until after the round because he didn't want to affect McIlroy's game.

....i'm almost sure jealousy had nothing to do with it and the above conclusion is spot on..

i remember watching live on tv when the caddie talked to rory and the announcers mentioned that it looked like they were discussing something serious and the other guy said the caddie was probably just congratulating him on his round and then they went into that tunnel..

GC said that he took relief, he didn't rake full relief. It was a rule he should have known, but many rules are easy to forget. I actually agree with Charlie Rymer. They need a rules official with every group.

Rory made a mistake. Tiger made mistakes. Sergio potentially made a mistake. The rules are convoluted and pros don't know all the rules. There needs to be changes to the way tournaments are administered.

There is already a time limit on the rulings.

I applaud that caddie for protecting the field like he should. Something that Dyson's caddie didn't care much about doing.

Here is some more food for thought...this caddie probably saved Rory from DQ. So not only did he protect the field, but very likely protected Rory as well.

So, naive question. He opted to take relief, but accidentally/purposely only took partial relief. Would this not be to his disadvantage to not take full relief? Thus, why the penalty?

Guess I'm trying to understand the thought process behind the intent of the penalty.

Good to see Phil and Rory having strong opening tournaments to their 2014 seasons. A big triangular rivalry between these two and Woods would be the best thing for golf.

The intresting point in this was the caddie getting involved, Why didnt his Boss make the call . The drop would come under a local rule as it was a spectator path . So I will assume Rory didnt even measure the "one" club length . Mc should know the rule , but the way it all panned out will leave a sour taste . Caddie,s making the call is a new one for 2014 , and as for saving Rory from DSQ it appears when they reviewed the Video it was inconclusive and only when the went back out to the spot was it agreed that his foot must have been on the line. That said "rules are rules" so he has to "suck it up"

One time is was explained to me like this: Your kid wants you to cut the crust off his sandwich because he doesn't like them, but then you turn around and he's eating the crusts off of the countertop. I laughed.

In reality, the rule is worded that way because nearest point of (complete) relief may not be in a desirable spot. The Ruling Bodies probably figure that if you are going to claim relief because of interference, then you better be clear of the interference.

I don't but, if he loses by 1 or 2 then the ruling will be a big factor.

Hopefully he goes out and shoots 64 and wins but we'll see, Craig Lee is playing very well and making very few mistakes if he keeps that up he will be hard to shift unless someone has a worldie!!
