Public Atlanta courses

Traveling to Atl, I need some good public courses within 30min of downtown? I've played Cobblestone in the past but heard recently the condition are not worth the $$ any suggestions???

90% of what is within 30 min will be private but there a few good options. I would try Cherokee Run first. It is east of downtown and a nice Arnold Palmer course. It is set in what was the equestrian park for the 1996 Olympics. Heritage in Tucker will meet the time frame and is pretty good, not great, but worth a round. Check out The Frog in Villa Rica. It is a nice Fazio design. I'm guessing it will take 35-40 minutes but it is the best course under 45 minutes. Anything else worth playing will be over an hour from downtown.

I agree with Cherokee Run (East of Atlanta). I would also add Wolf Creek (West of Atlanta), Crystal Lake (South of Atlanta), and River Pines (North of Atlanta).

Wolf creek, crystal lake, heritage are the only quality courses within 30 min of downtown.

Now if you drive 45 mins out.. You get a better list.

Agree with Heritage. The range was sandy the last couple of times I played it but the course was in good shape.

What does Stone Mountain look like these days?

Stone mountain (stonemont) was once my favorite public track to play in Atlanta. Long, tight, and challenging.

They have gone downhill fast. The greens are below average at best and mostly burned up. Course doesn't drain well either making the fairways always having runoff killing the grass.

It's a solid track but I wouldn't pay more than $40 in the fall (6 weeks after aeration) when in good shape.

Lakemont is horrible. Greens are so bad.

I worked there in the early nineties. We would often play the old 18 w/out the new holes when the courses were empty. It's too bad they've let it go.

That was a weird decision to incorporate 9 of LaFoy's into each side. Edit: it seems they have put the original 18 back together. That must have happened when the park turned the management over to Marriott.

Consider Mystery Valley near Stone Mountain. Yes it is a muni but good layout and good greens And the price is right.

Coweta Club is good too and never, ever crowded.

I concur with Cheroke Run, Wolf Creek. I also enjoyed a round at The Oaks Course earlier this year, though it was late April (Masters week) and the Bermuda had yet to come in due to cold conditions.

i usually play it once a year because it's always in good shape and has a few good holes and usually has a big open grill going at the turn...but it has some quirky holes too...if you're going that direction, look at bridgemill...better layout imo...and italian sausage dogs that rule...
