2016 Waste Management Phoenix Open: Discussion Thread

GolfWRX is live from the 2016 Waste Management Phoenix Open -- the most raucous, and endlessly entertaining golf event on the PGA Tour -- at TPC Scottsdale in Phoenix, which plays as a par-71 measuring 7,266 yards. More than 20,000 fans per day gather around the par-3 hole No. 16 to party... and watch some golf, too.

The field this year is set to include Rickie Fowler, currently ranked No. 4 in the Official World Golf Rankings, Bubba Watson (No. 5), Kevin Kisner (No. 16) and Phil Mickelson (No. 32).

Last year, Brooks Koepka (No. 16) won his first PGA Tour event with a Sunday 66, holding off a crowd of three runner-up finishers including Watson.

Pretty sure it's a one-off give that his name is on it, but could always ask them. Be prepared to pay a lot though.

Citing the numbers that this event draws, what say you WRXers about other events setting up a hole along the lines of their stadium #16?

IMO, while there may be a negative aspect or two, the positives outweigh them. For one thing, that hole (and by way of association, the entire tournament) helps to dispel the stuffy image of golf. Plus, it draws the crowds and hence the $$. Plus, it adds great energy and entertainment value.

Should this be considered by other events?

I completely get your point and I think #17 at The Players comes the closest to #16 at WM. It is hard to replicate the location, time of year of the event, involvement of the sponsor, history of the tournament, etc. A lot of variables come together to create the uniqueness of this hole. If it were to be replicated on a mass scale, I would be concerned that it would seem contrived/forced. Each tournament should seek their own vibe. It is undeniable that the WM is extremely entertaining and one of my favorite PGA Tour events.
