I have a question about hybrids

Jackal66

Recommended Posts

In the past, I have tried several hybrids of the common type.

What I mean as 'common', is the mini wood type.

Every one of these hooked like crazy.

Even the ones with an X stiff shaft.

The other day I saw some Adams hybrids that look like a weighted iron.

Are these easier to hit?

Do they hit like a normal iron?

Thanks for any info or input.

All experiences appreciated.

Have you tried a hybrid with a flatter lie angle? Some hybrids are more upright, which can make them hooky. Maybe hit the Mizuno CLK or try the new Ping G410 that is adjustable.

The "crossover" clubs like you show (G410 crossover, TMB, MP-18 MMC Fli-Hi, etc) work for some people as well.

yea the upright lie angle may be the hooky cause. Not sure. The iron you have pictured is a regular iron though. The new ping g410 looks great, adjustable lie angle, very nice. Also one not to over look is the tour edge CBX 119 - definitely aimed at better players and so it probably doesn't have a draw bias like many do. Outside of that - get fit and try try try :)

The hosel on the one I have pictures says "Hybrid" . Is it just a hybrid iron?

I had the same issue. I am currently playing Ping G400 Andy I can fade or draw, but mostly wants to go straight. Hated the G410. I agree Apex 2016 is another great anti hook hybrid.

I believe that 4 iron is a hollow body iron from about 2012. Part of a stock Adams set from that time.

Ok, thanks.

I thought it might have been a crossover.

Sounds like I need to try some 'modern' ones.

The newest I've hit was 2015-2016.

Hybrids are a club that a lot of people don't particularly try to learn how to hit. They say, "I always hit a hook with it so I'm going to stick with my long irons" but don't even try to understand why they hit that hook in the first place.

What I tell my friends is that they should learn how to hit a hybrid first. They don't even have to hit it well. Just enough to get it flying half the time (without a hook) and get a few pure strikes in there on the range so that you understand what the hybrid will bring to your game if you stick with it. After that, if you want to switch to something else, do it.

Just as there are GI irons that have draw bias in them so are there hybrids. And just as there are far more GI irons out there there are also far more GI/draw bias hybrids out there.

Even though better players now often have at least 1 hybrid in their bag the vast majority of hybriods are carried by higher handicappers that need the draw bias. That is why most of the hybrids on the market are "GI" types.

They also usually have lighter weight shafts,,,,,,,,,, for the same reason(s), Lighter weight shafts can contribute to ~~hooking~~ drawing the ball as well, again, usually what a higher handicapper needs.

That said there ARE some hybrids out there that are targeted towards better players. These are not typically draw biased and usually have somewhat heavier shafts in them (which also lends to straighter, i.e. anti-draw bias shot).

Some companies have both types. Callaway "Big Bertha" (GI) and Apex (Player's). Titleist has the H1 (GI) and H2 (Player's). Ping OTOH has only the 410 hybrid but offers adjustability in the hosel for loft and lie which help with draw/fade bias.

Hope this helps.

You'd probably be happy with a players hybrid, that will be smaller and more iron-like vs looking like a baby wood. Examples of these would be the taylormade m1/m3, titleist h2, callaway apex pro/xr pro, and some of the older adams hybrids. If you're a bit wary of spending too much $$$ for it to not work out the adams hybrids can be had for a song on ebay or in your local used bins and are excellent clubs
