when are you suppose to bow the wrist?

I have a pretty strong grip so my left wrist is cupped at address and naturally at the top. When is the proper time to attempt flatten or bow the left wrist?

from P2 to P4? - this seems to shallow the club going back and promo a cup wrist coming down.

from P4 to P5?

from P4 to P6?

just trying to confirm where the majority of good ball strikers start?

Thanks in advance.

Looks like you got your question answered correctly. But I'm wondering, why do you knowingly play golf with a strong grip/cupped wrist at address and beyond? Is this a physical limitation or attempted technique or just comfort thing? Curious

Thanks

With a strong grip, I don't understand how any player has anything but a cupped wrist at the top. I physically cannot bow my wrist with a strong grip despite being reasonably flexible.

It's something that I added to my swing...by doing it.

Maybe for you but not for the vast majority of recreational golfers.

Just like walking, proper movements have to be forced for a time if you have been forcing the wrong movements from inception.

Not to mention there is more than one direction for the club/handle to change directions to. Depending on which direction you go, the exact opposite can occur (which is more prevalent/common)

Bowing is not the point - flexing is. There are our winners that hit the ball with an extended lead wrist but they flexed in the downswing - yes they have a string grip - Tyler ferrel shows a 3d graph of a tour winner ( does not name them) that does exactly this in his motorcycle move explained video. He says that tour pro are somewhere in the 30* degree range of more flexed at impact than at setup but they aren’t necessarily bowed at impact.

Thank you, I was extremely thankful to receive the answer from Monte.

I was coming "over the top" in my down swing with a neutral/ weak grip which resulted in a power slice. If you saw my swing at the time, I was doing some weird fish out of water movement.

I had an in-person lesson with Monte and he fixed my grip/ squared my shoulders and I never changed it since- it feels like home.. my body movement changed as a whole to a much tighter/better golf swing instantly.. So I guess its everything you mentioned:

physical limitation- I couldn't physically executed a in-out path/square the face with a neutral grip.

attempted technique- 100%

just comfort thing - 100%

strong grip just fits my swing.

my lead wrist bows late in the swing on its own, but 2 really good instructors mentioned I should at least be flat or a little bow at the top for my swing so I want to ingrain it next.

Best to focus on extending trail wrist rather than what wrists look like at the top then somewhere in the transition/ downswing add flex to lead wrist by flexing it or adding more extension of trail wrist. What the wrists look like at the top is highly dependent on relationship of hands in the grip assuming the trail wrist is extended.

I see him do it. I just can't even do it in a pose, forget about while swinging.

Jon Rahm seems to have a neutral grip. I can force myself into a bowed position from a neutral grip.

  • 3 weeks later...

Is the flat / bowed wrist just a result of setting the wrist at the right time, or is it some kind of active move that takes place around p4 and p6?

My guess is that it's all about the wrist set.

My left wrist has been cupped at the top since I was 12 years old. I can flatten it, but I have to do one of these things in order to do it:

Late wrist setWeak left hand gripShorten the swing to about 3/4Make a huge turn in the back-swingSince I don't like doing any of these, I'm pretty much stuck with a cupped wrist. Maybe I'm setting my wrists way too early or too much.

Whatever driver happens to be working at the time
Some random 3 wood
My same, old irons
A few wedges...
