Phoenix Area Course Suggestions

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I will be in the Phoenix area for a short vacation and was looking for some course suggestions? I will be playing both the We-Ko-Pa courses and will be golfing one other day but am struggling to choose a choose a course... I was thinking of playing the Stadium course at TPC just to play the same course the pros do but there are so many other options.

I am a 2 handicap and love a challenge. (My home course plays at 77.1/151 slope)

Thanks in advanced,

Fresh Greens

Whirlwind is my favorite course in the area. Great layout, no houses, always in great shape. There are 2 courses there, and you can't go wrong with either one.

Eagle Mountain is in the same area as We Ko Pa, and is another one of my favorites.

I'd say the toughest course I've played there is ASU Karsten. There were some memorably tough holes there, and the rough added to the challenge (don't find much rough in those desert courses). Las Sendas has a rep for being really tough, but I thought Karsten was tougher.

I thought Longbow was the best value of all the courses I've played there. Not very expensive, but has excellent, and extremely fast greens. I watched a guy putt a ball right into the desert on a downhill putt once. Good times.

Thanks guys, appreciate the feedback.

Would Dove Mountain be worth the drive?
[/quote]If you have your heart set on playing a course you've seen on TV I think its better than TPC. But I'd look at Troon or southern dunes before either Dove or TPC.

Karsten and las sendas are two of the tracks that I pretty much have zero interest in ever playing again. Karsten is right next to a huge power plant with power lines and equipment in your view, and if that doesn't matter, you've got some absurd mounding and some par 5's that have been turned into long par 4's without the green complexes designed for a longer approach vs wedge shot. Yeah there's rough but there's lots to hate about the course haha, never would suggest that one.

Las Sendas has holes where you can literally hit the fairway and have the ball run into the desert. What about the par 5 where you are forced to either hit it over a corner of a mountain(totally blind) or lay up short, like really short, or have the ball run through the fairway into a bunker at the bottom left edge of the dogleg right(top right is the mountain, go right and you have a blind approach to the green).

Read the thread in the southwest forum, that's got what you're looking for.

Karsten or Las Sendas wouldn't be my top choices either. But the guy said he liked a challenge, so I mentioned the toughest courses I've played in the Phoenix area.

I didn't understand all the hype around Troon North when I played it. Don't get me wrong, it is nice. But there are houses everywhere on the course, and for less money you can play courses that are just as well conditioned and aren't surrounded by homes (Whirlwind, for example).

Was just there a month ago. Southern Dunes is a great course and worth the drive, especially for the price. The Verrado Golf Club in Buckeye is also excellent. And Tegavah which is up near Troon is also a sweet track. These 3 courses are all great tracks that can be had at a great price, as long as you don't mind a little bit of car travel time.

Going to suggest an odd course.

Dinosaur Mountain Course at Golf Mountain Golf Resort.

Once you get past the 70's big round golf ball advertising on your way into the course and the tacky club house the golf course itself is amazing.

Don't play the Sidewinder Course only the Dinosaur Mountain Course.

Its off HWY 60 in the southeast corner.

If you want to go for a drive in the northwest corner is Quintero Golf Club.

One other besides Wekopa Saguaro would be Southern Dunes, hands down.

We were down in Pheonix not so long ago and played both TPC courses. The Stadium was fun to play because its always fun to play a course you no from TV. I also find you get some residual value at of round on one these courses as you enjoy watching the tour event more in the future know the course.

Having said that as a course we loved the TPC Champion course - it was in great shape and it would be worth playing 36 at TPC

I don't think you could have mentioned 3 courses that were any further from each other. All of them are awesome and all are worth the drive. I can only imaging how many miles you drove while you were here.

Ironically, coming from Charlotte, NC, I have found here in Scottsdale exactly what I found in Charlotte: the best public tracks are a drive, and often in very different directions. In Scottsdale (Phoenix) it is We-ko-pa and Tegavah (not too far from each other in north Scottsdale), Southern Dunes (as it implies, way south of Phoenix), and then the northwest contingent of Quintero (love/hate on this board) and Wickenburg Golf and Social (just opened, public, nearly impossible to get on).

I played the TPC stadium course about 1.5 weeks ago and would recommend it without hesitation. The course was in awesome shape and it was fun to play a course the pros play. We had forecaddie with our group who was able to give several fun facts about the course and also did a good job with calling out shots to hit. The whole staff was accommodating and the overall experience was better than what I was expecting.

Give it a shot!
