Right Side Swing, anyone?

Recommended Posts

I'm on the shelf for a few weeks, and so reading about golf is all I can do while injured. Saw this guy on YouTube teaching what he called the Right Side Swing....claims he was N California Teacher of the Year in 2006.

Basically, it's an offshoot of Stack and Tilt. Admittedly, the physics are interesting, in that the gist of it is that you keep weight left and rotate the left hip behind you on the downswing while you hit down slightly inside-out w/ the arms, and the trail hip of course "hitting" thru via the rotation. Speed is definitely a by-product of power producers (hips and arms) working parabolically in opposition. And the centered, no move off the ball does seem like it would improve ball/turf contact.

Anyone here use this method, or even S+T, and has/have seen sustained improvement?

The RSS originates from Gary Edwin in Australia.

It is NOT an offshoot of Stack and Tilt - i've joined his site before and remember an amusing clip putting that nonsense down - it's a shame he doesn't put a few more of his videos out in public on youtube to dispel the misunderstsanding and lack of knowledge of what he is teaching.

There's an old thread here about it too

I'd always had good results in the past when using the pre-set Faldo pump drill thing - where you set up with club shaft parallel to target line with toe up and more or less start from there but was not able to get to that position in my backswing. The RSS setup which is essentially a reverse K (which is what I used to setup in a long time ago) finally means I can get in a good backswing position, and has also made a huge difference to my usually execrable chipping and pitching...

Well, the teacher himself said RSS is very related to S&T; that's why I called it an offshoot. It definitely is similar in that you plant your weight left and stay there. Looks like a pretty simple move, at least when this teacher demonstrated it....that's why I was intrigued. It's a short, compact move.... typically easier to repeat than long, more shifting-type moves.

IF hitting huge hooks and snaps are easy to repeat then yea I guess so. Honestly it caused alot more issues than it helped there is a reason it isn't seen at the higher levels. It may help someone who is way over the top or something to get more shallow but, they won't zero pivot and all arm swing.

I don't get the impression that it's zero pivot; there is a definite pivot on the thru-swing; you're right in that there isn't much (none) in the backswing. I agree w/ your assessment that it must not be that effective, in that it hasn't seemed to gain any traction among the golfing populace. I guess I was intrigued based on me being a Jimmy Ballard-influenced player who has been contemplating a more "centered" swing; more "pressure shift" vs. actually moving back and thru so much (and I know Jimmy doesn't see it as "so much movement", but when I get "off", I almost inevitably catch myself coming to the conclusion that I'm moving too much), once I get off the shelf in a few weeks from my surgery occuring this coming Thursday.

And it is true that in tinkering with it in my driveway w/ Real Feel mats and Pelz' Almost Golf balls, blocks and big hooks seem the flavor of the day, beyond several dead straight shots I hit.

You weren’t doing it properly. The RSS will pretty much take the left side out of play when done correctly.

  • 4 weeks later...

I accidentally stumbled across something close to this while playing yesterday. I typically setup with a forward shaft lean but thought yesterday, "why don't I setup closer to the position I'm in at impact?" which led me to shifting my weight more over my left hip at setup in addition to the forward shaft lean. Long story short, I've never hit my irons like that in my life. Long, straight, boring trajectory. I struggle with an over the top move and have been working on shallowing my downswing and this greatly simplified that for me. For some reason the same setup principle I adopted didn't occur to me on the teebox. I can't wait to get back out and give this more of a go. I came home immediately and started googling "setup for impact" and that rabbit trail led me to RSS. I've been playing long enough to know there is no holy grail swing fix but I'm excited by my initial results with the irons & wedges.

My ball striking has been completely transformed with what feels to me like a right sided swing...**but I actually think it's just a fundamenal of the body release**, squaring the club without ever consciously releasing my wrists (if anything my only swing thoughts are DON'T unhinge or roll the wrists and turn through). Has the feeling of the right side really firing through the ball. I've gone from regularly fatting shots to very well compressed strikes and shallow divot after the ball and a baby draw. My bad shots are now acceptable and I am hitting the ball 20% further.

I see a lot of players quit with the right side in their swings leading to both pushes and pulls. Getting the right side to work properly has felt like a RSS to me as I've improved the turn through the ball, but like I said, I really think it's just a fundamental in any good golf swing.

reverse K with an open stance and more weight on the left than right has been killing it for me recently. I forgot what it feels like to truly compress a golf ball.
