I found a Pinnacle Gold Distance ball and used it on a 527 yard par 5 (level ground, no elevation change from tee to fairway) and had 197 to the middle of the green for my approach. This ball is looooong! I may have to buy a couple sleeves for those bomber holes.

I used to do exactly what you are trying to figure out, and when I played in a scramble always had a bag of Pinnacles, TopFlites, etc, for tee shots.

But honestly I don't think it really matters anymore, and I don't bother with the cheapo balls in scrambles now. Premium balls now are all as long off the driver as the cheaper distance balls; everything is pretty much a Pinnacle at the core. What you pay for in a premium ball is cover technology and spin rates off the lofted clubs.

My best advice if you have already figured out which premium ball is the longest for you is to use that in the scramble. The only exception would be something like using a ProV1x off the tee and the ProV1 into the greens, or the RX off the tee and the RXS into the greens.

Pinnacle Gold is the longest for my 95ss, ymmv. Also, in comparing the Pinnacle Gold to the Titleist Velocity, the specs are identical. The last time I was at Dick's SG, I pulled one of each out and the cover/dimples look to be the same. I think it's the same ball, less the markings (or should I say marketing).

I used to switch golf balls for tee shots and approach shots for a scramble until I discovered the Chrome+. For me it goes forever off the tee and then stops on a dime around the greens. I have a swing speed of 110-115mph, so that may have something to do with it. Otherwise, yeah, Pinnacle Golf, E7, HX Hot, Topflite XL. It is hard to go wrong with any of those.

They use pinnacle gold for the Remax Long drive competition. I would go with the golds.

+1 on this. I don't think the "distance" balls are any longer (and in most cases not as long) as the premium ball that matches for you. Personally, It would be between the Srixon XV and Bridgestone B330 or B330 RX (Despite a SS that says B330, the RX may be the longest I've hit). Also like the idea of switching to the softer/more spin version into the greens. My limited experience with the TM Lethal suggest it might be in that group as well.

That being said - I do use the handful of extra distance balls (Maxfli Fire or Pinnacle are both good) - for when I want to try for an insane carry ( a one out of 10 or 20 shot) on a hole that usually requires a layup and my teammates have already done that.

depends...if you're expected to be the guy hitting low percentage long circus shots, off the tee cutting corners or whatever, i'd go with the cheap pinnacles so you don't feel so bad losing them...

I disagree...at least for me. I did a pretty thorough test of golf balls last summer and found that balls like the Pinnacle Gold and Titleist Velocity definitely give you more distance. 10-15 yards in some cases if struck really well. I think it has a lot to do with significantly less spin off the driver. However, approach shots are a whole different story. This is where the premium balls are vastly superior. If manufacturers could ever figure out how to combine the two, the perfect golf ball would arrive.

Again, I found the oppositie to be true as I did multiple test on this last summer. The distance balls will consistently fly longer than the premium balls off of the tee. Both myself and my friend agreed on this after testing this during multiple rounds on the course. But as we both stated in our post, premium balls are much much better on the approach shots. As you said, I would only use a Pinnacle Gold or Titleist Velocity in a scramble or cold weather. For tournament play, I would definitley use a premium ball.
