How close to an Ace have you come?

My closest came on an elevated 120 yard hole when I was 15 or 16. Hit a soft wedge that hit the front of the green and ran towards the cup. Swore it was going to drop but it somehow rolled over over the edge of the cup. Tapped it in for my first birdie. That was 20 years ago.

Since taking golf up again a few years back I've had several around 2 ft.

Someday.....

I've had 2 hit the stick and end up 30+ feet from the pin but I have been real close quite a few times with the closest being a 6 iron I hit directly at the pin. Ball lands 10ft from the pin and rolls up hill towards cup and as the ball gets just under pin high it breaks to the right leaving me 3/4" tap in birdie.

My closest ace is a short 126 yard par3 at my club. Smooth wedge hit the bottom part of the pin once, basically almost dunked it; ball ended up in the fringe. Another time, I hit the pin on a bounce, but got a bad ricochet and ended up 9 feet away above the hole. And finally, another time, same hole, I hit the middle of the flagstick, got a weird spin and ended up 3 feet away.

Also, earlier this fall, 384 yard par4, it's a double carry, so once off the tee and again off the approach. It's a dogleg left, and hit my tee shot into the rough leaving a 165 yard approach. Hit a perfect shot that rolled from the front of the green to an inch from the cup.

Anyway, all that being said, still no ace.........

My first ever Par 3 GIR was on a 187yd par 3 at Willow Brook Country club in 2003. I hit a 4 iron within 3 inches.

I have been chasing that high ever since.

Not only did I miss the ace on this, a 219yd Par 3, I missed the putt.

Yep, and it was in a tournament.

In fact, the match-play event that I won that silver cup in my avatar.

It was the quarter-finals, and my opponent dumped his ball in the left front green side bunker.

Though expecting him to concede the putt, my caddy none the less handed me my putter(Nappa '06) as he walked around the left side of the green and I walked straight between the traps to mark my ball if my opponent didn't concede the putt.

Well, he said nothing, I marked, and he came out of the bunker to about 6-7'.

He ran the putt, retrieved his ball and walked back to his caddy on the left side if the green, again, saying nothing.

To say that I was pissed would be an understatement. Ok, this was an Inter-Club Tourney and there was no love loss between us. I'll leave it at that.

So I was front left with my caddie, so I walked over, put my ball down and back handed it one handed, right handed. Well, as most of you know, the Nappa(or any heel shafted 8802 style) putter has a flange to it. Instead of tapping the ball mid-line, my putter went low and lifted the ball into the air and it landed on the left edge and ran over the edge, leaving me 5-6" coming back.

I was 1 up at the time and would close him out 3/2, however this was without a doubt my most "butchered" birdie in 46 years of golf, LMAO.

  • 2 weeks later...

Last year at TPC Scottsdale Wednesday after the waste managment. I'm playing with a great older gent and his wife and we are all playing well. We get to 16 go through the grandstand (great feeling) I swing a 7 iron and hit it pure, as soon as it left my partner started repeating " Ive never seen a hole in one" landed three feet in front of the hole bounce over the cup and came back to 6 inches. I felt so bad that I did not show him an ace, the 10 or 12 guys working at tearing down the grandstand did yell and cheer though.
I am fortunate to have three aces 2 on short par threes 1 possibly ugliest hole in one on a short par 4

I have been close a couple times. I hit the flag stick about a two feet up on the fly once and gotten with in a foot twice. Ugh.

I have never had an eagle either. I have had putts for eagle several times but the closest I have been is about 12 feet. When I was playing THe Bay Course, I drive one OB on a par 5, then took three to get it home. I call that my 'faux eagle'.

Perhaps this year, if this damnable snow ever clears out.
