Last thursday I was playing in an outing. Par 3 about 140...slight wind at my back to a very front sucker pin. I was between clubs. Either a murdered out PW or a baby 9. But I don't do well when I have to baby any club, so I went for the murdered out pw. Hit it, had a nice draw, but it's looking like it's gonna come up way short.....it hits and I couldn't believe it. It landed 6 inches from the hole....of course it had so much freaking back spin on it and the green sloped back to front, so it spun 15 ft, off the green. But thats the closest. Maybe someday but not overly hopeful.

Have never made one, but close about a month ago. Par 3, elevated tee, around 128yds. Using a Pro VX & hit a 3/4 PW. It hits about 2 feet past the hole & backs up. It has enough speed that it does a half a cup rim-out. Left with a 5-6 inch putt.

Of course I am all by myself so didn't have anyone to witness it. At least all my friends that I have told that to know I do not make things up.

I have come within a foot more times than I can remember... closest, however, was last season. Par 3 into the wind on a very chilly day. It was 200 yards, playing more like 220 with wind and the cold, heavy air. I flushed a 3 iron, landed a couple feet on the green (which there was water directly in front of the green and only fringe before it) and rolled up and lipped out. At least, it made a 90* turn at the hole. Ball stopped 6 inches from the cup.

A week later my buddy, the same guy I was playing with that day, got his 2nd hole in one while I was playing with him haha

I should have one. I don't. It was a par 3 playing 193 slightly downhill. I hit a faded 5 iron (lefty) that landed 5 feet short and right of the cup. The ball hit, bounced, rolled forward and left directly to the cup. We thought it was in. The ball made a weird 90* movement right by the cup (trying to make sense of it from 200 yards away) and rolled left, when we got to the green we saw why: the jerks playing ahead of us didn't pin the flag all the way in. They left the flag leaning forward about 30* and cut off the front of the cup. 6" tap-in bird :(

A bag of left-handed junk.

8" at The Golden Bear Club at Keene's Pointe #16. Gave me the closest to the pin for the guest while playing my brother in the member/guest tournament so that was a nice experience. Made the birdie and won a bottle of Scotch which I exchanged for a Burner TP.

Some really close ones here. I hit the flag stick on one bounce several years ago, but it didn't turn out well. My closest in 30 years of golf came yesterday.

Playing in a fancy outing once with a Cadillac parked next to tee box for a hole in one, I hit a 5 iron right at the flag. It hops once and taps the stick and plops down 6 inches from the cup. We get up to the green and the woman who was observing in case as the witness for the car says "that was the closest someone has come all day.." You think!

I don't think anybody can beat this. My friend did this during a tournament and straight plugged it in the lip!

He had to mark, fix the ball mark, and place it on the lip

I have had 2 very close calls, roughly 35 years apart.
At 10 hitting my 3 wood (youth set did not have a driver) on a par 3..roughly 150 yards depending on placement. I hit a drive right at the pin, it rolled up the sloped green, missed by about 6 inches to the right, rolled about 6 inches past and then rolled back by about 6 inches to the left of the pin...basically circling the pin at half a foot away.
Then never came close for 35 years. This year, par 3 165ish, hit a nice soft fade with a 7, heading right toward the pin came up just short. It's one of those where you can see it's close but you don't have the depth perception to see if it's above or below the hole, I could see it was very close from the side but figured it wasn't as close as it looked.
Walked up, fixed the ball mark which was about 6 feet below the hole, you could see that the ball was on a dead line for the hole and literally stopped 3-4 inches short.

Anyway the one at 10 was my first career birdie so it wasn't all bad.

  • 4 weeks later...

The night of my 30th birthday my wife threw a surprise party for me at a very nice hotel. Bath was filled with ice & a wide variety of alcohol (best mate was a sales rep for a brewery). Drank all night, saw the sunrise before getting about 2 hours sleep. Had a 10am tee time. 3rd hole is a par 3, flag was at about 165 meters (about 180 yards). Was still drunk & fell over while trying to tee the ball up. Flushed 6 iron, 1 hop into the hole. Only ace so far.

Recently I played early by myself. As I made the turn I saw several groups of women had been allowed to go off the back 9. Fair to say I was pretty PO'd and gave subtle hints to the women in front of me that I was not impressed (not great behavior on my part I agree). Anyway the group in front called me through at the 11th, a par 3. I hit 9 iron and watched the ball going straight to the pin then making a 90 degree bounce to the left. Got to the green and saw that the ball had impacted into the right side of the hole, bouncing off the metal/plastic cup insert (no idea what that's called). That's as close as I've been without putting it in. Did make the birdie putt & nice to do it when called through.

First round this season. At least it got me pumped to try and finish one. Does not look like its gonna happen this year though. Only a few rounds left, winter comes quick in Vermont.

about as close as they come ...

one round this summer I had 4 near hole outs

hole 3 nice crisp 7 iron , land it right where I want and watch it roll towards the cup , hits the stick but too hard and left me a foot , really thought it was going to drop ..ok bird is good keep moving
hole 5 , I took a 6 iron from 195 and was sure it was going to be in the cup but decided to check up right before the hole. (pic)
12th hole hit behind and spun back , still not sure how it stopped above the hole about 3 inches
and the last the 17th was almost a fly in but about an inch to the right ... ended up about 7-10ft but seeing how close the pitch mark was I will still count it

pretty nice to make 4 birds on par 3's in one round however I still am waiting for my first hole out , and as the seasons go on I feel I have paid my dues with close calls ..will keep trying though

been close a few times, never made one. Best one was when I was playing alone and came up on some of the kids from the school that I teach at who let me play through on a par 3 that plays about 140-145. One of them says, "Hit it close Mr. E", another says, "yeah, ace it!". I stepped up and hit it a touch thin, a laser right at the flag that nailed the stick and ended up about 10 feet past. They were impressed, I was laughing.

I have hit it inside two inches on two seperate occasions. I was playing the third hole on the Bethpage Black and hit the worst piece of crap thin 8 iron that hit the front of the green and rolled all the way back to the hole. It looks like it is going in the hole and at the last second moved slightly left to end up one inch to the left of the hole. It was one of the worst shots I ever hit and I am glad it didn't go in the hole (although the scorecard would never know the difference). We all had a big laugh about it at the time.
