Putting Etiquette...Getting Better or Worse?

Personally, I always ask my playing partners to wait at the 100 yard marker while I putt out. At first people thought I was weird but now they just give me my space - they play one hole ahead of me and we meet in the pro shop after the round. Well, lately they've all had places to go, so they aren't always there when I finish... but you know sometimes people are busy.

That's because most of them are the perpetrators of poor golf etiquette and have difficulty breaking 90. They can not comprehend that putting is roughly 40% of the game and one putts are vital to low scores and making the game more enjoyable.

I'd forgotten about this thread, ah good times, good times. Anyways...

I love the derision directed at hacks there, as if an inability to execute a successful putt has anything to do with one's inability to do the math and understand how it impacts the score. I'm likely one of the hackier, higher indexes posting in this thread and as you can see only 5 out of 20 start with a 9. So I think you have missed the mark on that one.

And as far as etiquette is concerned, I've read enough posts of those in this thread to know regardless of whether I agree with them on a certain subject or if we've had a childish pissy comment back and forth; that they all know how to play the game fairly, with class, and with respect for their playing partners. To the point I'd happily tee it up with any of them.

Your comments in this thread - although giving me an opportunity to be pissy - have not shown any of those attributes with regards to playing the game, missing the mark on that point too.

Looks like the OP wouldn't play with that inconsiderate little jerk Adam Scott.

How Rory didn't tee up a ball at Adam's head is beyond me. At the very least he should be throwing Adam's ball into the water hazard.

Apparently he's isn't cool and tough

Thank you and good luck.

This reminds me of the guy who asked me to move out of his line on an approach shot. I was parked in a cart 40 yards behind him. Granted I was in line with the pin, but just haven't experienced that before. He must have had a very sensitive periph.

OP would get eaten alive by my Sunday evening group. It's actually more distracting when they aren't talking, walking around, etc. Trash talk and insults flying...

Last year on our fall golf trip we realized that the absolute best way to distract someone is to *stop* talking just as they take the putter back. Talking on the green is common enough in our group that the first time everyone shut up at once I snapped my head up because I thought some kind of disaster was happening. For the rest of the weekend someone would stand behind the putter and make "cut" motions so that everyone fell silent at the same time...

How far away from the hole should a person who is not putting be standing?

I have had some really good rounds this year totally ruined because of poor putting ettiquette by clowns. For example: Not marking your ball, talking when someone is putting, standing closer than 10 feet from the hole when someone else is putting. And my favorite...the moron holding the flag who is just dying to get that flag in the hole (while I'm putting for birdie!)...he is 5 feet away! WTF!

4. Leave the flag on the ground until everyone is done putting
I feel your pain, I occasionally play a round with an acquaintance that will constantly stand within a yard of the hole, holding the pin whenever I have a crucial putt. Whether it's a birdie or putt to win the match he'll be right there. Called him out on it and he said he was trying to apply "Pressure". :WTF:

It's fine to hold the flag, but stay out of view of the player.

This thread is hilarious and the OP makes some really good points! I see so many rude, jealous, and ignorant golfers standing just 5 or 6 feet on the opposite side of the hole when someone is putting for birdie. LOL! What's so hard about getting out of the way? Yeah...it sucks playing with idiots like this.

I like to lay the flagstick about 3 feet behind the hole. And then I remind the guy putting to not worry about the hitting the flagstick penalty because their pace and ability to read the greens is outstanding.
