SOFTEST feeling Newport/Anser style putter

WRX putter nuts, help me! ;) In a hunt for the SOFTEST feeling newport/anser style putter as a gamer. Not so willing to game my byron or slighter, these are too beautiful to me to be my gamer. But if i cant find any, i'll game them for sure.

 

Which of these putters are the softest ? Gauge design crazy caliper / Scotty newport 1 or 2 Oil can / Ben hogan bhb1-c / Palombi / Heritage putters / recommend me a butter putter preferably a carbon steel putter. Very interested in a gauge crazy caliper, any review/comments on them would be appreciated ! :)

If you're wanting to go with softest feeling (read: quietest) you'll want to go insert, probably something in an Odyssey. Stx may have an anser-style somewhere in their line, but they generally have their odd-mallet thing going on. Bobby Grace's HSM insert is very muted, but feels hot-ish, responsive almost like steel, but again--mostly mallets with that (and hard to come across anyway). As for solid steel putters, probably go for something in a carbon, I think TP Mills putters are up there, though Bettinardi's can feel good with a heavy enough weight.

 

What I don't get is why you don't want to game your Slighter or your Byron. Neither have any true, true collectibility value, especially as they've got your name stamped on them. Only putters that I can kind of consider dust collectors are ones that would appreciate in value...and even then the nod goes to gaming rather than holding.

Dude, putters were meant to be played with, not collected or looked at. Game those suckas!

 

My own opinion--I would never own a putter I didn't intend to game (or thought I could). Maybe with the exception of a commemorative putter like the Ben Hogan/Bettinardi 1953 putter. Of course, I don't own any commemorative putters so that's not an issue.

The softest feeling non-insert Anser style putter would be a Bettinardi BB1 or BB8. Even softer are the insert versions of said putters. A Newport TeI3 is also pretty mushy.

 

Those two aside, Rife putters are also very very soft feeling.

Nothing against the alternatives you mentioned, ak108, but get real: Slighters and Byrons are made to be played. Game them, don't leave them on the shelf.

 

If you break them in with some dings and nicks and bag chatter on your way to shooting your best scores and making some great memorable putts, all the better.

Ping Scottsdale Anser Nickel. I have one and it's probably the softest, yet crispest non-insert putter I've ever used. Much softer than even carbon steel putters. The feedback is amazing and I love the shaft that's used on it...with a LOOOOONG first step. I haven't used mine in a while, since I put a stupid thick grip to try one out. I will probably regrip it soon since I got some pingman blackouts and put it back in the rotation.

Dont get me wrong people, i game every single one of my putters so I WILL GAME my byron and slighter. This is more like another "reason" to buy another putter lol...

 

beruo: The Slighter & Byron might not have high resale value because there's my name on it but those 2 putters sure meant more than $5000 to me.

In my opinion the AOP Oil Can Newport is the most responsive non insert putter I have felt. I think this is going to be my gamer this year, pick one up for a reasonable price on your favorite auction site!

Take a look at the Whitlam Devon ETBW I hear it is really soft.

Certainly give the Rife Aussie a try if you're looking for a soft feeling all metal putter. It's pretty hard to describe its feeling - it's soft but there's still good feedback over insert putters.

TEi3's are a tad softer than carbon steel SC's so I'd look for one of those. The SS Cammys are quite a bit firmer than those, even the insert GSS.

soft? go with an odyssey. they have a whiffle ball insert. if you close your eyes and putt, you'll barely know you hit the ball.

Had a Odyssey white hot xg rossie. Looking for a carbon steel putter.

 

I realise there are alot of different grades of carbon steel. Which is the softest ??

Gauge design US GA01A ETBW (caliper or not) is the same as Withlam Devon ETBW , yes it is soft but I cannot compare with a Mills tradition

Different grades of SS and carbon will feel softer like the difference between 303 and 304.....as well as different series of carbon 1020, 1030, 1018, 1100series.

 

I do agree with your comment about design because face thickness is one of the most determining factors in the feel of the putter. Whether it be floating face, insert or parrallel pocket each design will have its own unique feel. THe shaft will have a lot to do with the feel too. UST FF and Graphite shafts will give a more muted feel so there is always that avenue if you choose (definitly not my personal favorite though ;))

The Mills Co. uses 304 SS and 1020 Carbon steel.

 

not all of the larger companies use the same materials.

Softest one I ever roled was the forged Heavy Putter. Among normal stuff, the Gauge Forged Pro L. Both of these have very deeply milled faces.

 

For non-milled faces, Ping's My Day and Cameron's original Newport 2 feel softer then normal, as do John Byron's Copper Cush and Kevin Burns 9304 1999 Masters Commemorative putter. with a 'hidden copper insert'. For some reason the Masters model is softer than the rest of his hidden copper insert line, like the 9301 and 9302.

 

If you want what I consider the biggest bargin in putters, try a Mitchell putter. Soft, deep-sett wedge of solid brass mounted with brass screws in a blade or mallet. $200 on their website but about $30 on EBAY when they come up. Mitchell & Co. is a premiere mfg of putter-making equipment.
