theres a lot of division 1 teams that have players scoring in the 80's and theres also a lot of D 2 teams whose players score in the 90's. you should get this thing called the ping college golf guide on the internet. it gives you so much information. feel free to PM me if you want to know where to get it or know more details about it.

Remember though...i stress this to every junior out there going to college...

Your first priority MUST be school.

If your not getting a scholarship or winning tournaments you have to put school first.

I think a lot of NCAA athletes make this mistake and think because they play at a D1 level they can make it in their respective sports.

Well you should have some sort of golf portfolio no? highlighting your scores, tournament achievements, etc.

You can be whatever handicap you are there is no set number which a lot of people don't understand.

You always see the question on the junior boards "what handicap or how good of a golfer do I have to be to play college golf?" There is no answer to this...you can play D3 golf and shoot in the 90's or you can play D1 on a scholarship and shoot par or better every round.

Unless your on a scholarship you don't get "Accepted" because of your golf, you have to get in through grades and SAT scores. If you are trying to gain a scholarship you should have some sort of portfolio ready to highlight your golfing skills along with a letter you can send to coaches, who ultimately decide if your a candidate for a scholarship.

I played for a D2 school my freshmen year, then transferred to a D1 school.

You need some sort of portfolio you can send to the coaches. Make sure to include EVERYTHING you've ever done.

If you can average less then 75 you'll be fine at any school.

if you average less than 75 your #1 on most D1 schools because thats like a +1 handicap or better.

If you shoot in the 70's consistently your in at most schools.

That may not be completely true. My senior year in high school my summer tournament average was around 73 in AJGA and tournaments around the Carolinas and I played about number 8 or 9 on my college team, which is kind of a middle of the pack D1 team. Granted, my average in qualifying at school was higher than 73, that being said, an average of 75 wouldn't have traveled for us.

A college scoring average of 75 wouldn't have been on your team!?!?

I highly highly doubt that...

Here is Georgia #3 in the country averages...71.44, 71.72, 72.14, 73.89, 74.67, 76.33, 77.17, 82.67

so 75 average gives you a #6 spot on the #3 team in the country...

That's not at all what I was saying. Qualifying averages versus scoring averages in tournaments are two different things. a 75 average in qualifying would be about 6 on our team when I played. a 75 in tournaments would have been 3 or 4. A kid who has a 75 average playing at his country club or in high school golf matches won't play #1 at most D1 schools when he shows up. Based on this year's stats a 75 in college events would be 5th at the school where I played.

The kid who as an 82 average at Georgia is not a 10 handicap. He probably played in one tournament, shot 84-80 but shoots way lower than that in qualifying.

If there is a good D1 team where their number 1 guy has a 75 average in qualifying/junior golf/summer events then I'll admit I'm wrong. I'm just pretty sure it isn't happening.

Well reading my post, I clearly said "if you average less than 75 your #1 on most D1 teams"

Now obviously I don't have the stats for every D1 team, but I would imagine the deeper you go in the rankings the closer to a 75 average the #1 guy becomes.

I never said anything about qualifying tournaments, etc.

I was just making a point that on D1 schools the #1 guy is less than 75 scoring average.

I was also saying on most teams your starters average in the 70's for their scoring average...again the deeper you go the higher that number will be thats just common sense...

The last thing I am/was trying to do is start an argument about college golf on the internet. The way I read what you said was that by being able to average 75 in general would play #1 on most college teams. I'm sure there are tons of schools where the number 1 guy averages 75. On the same hand though, the guy who average 82 for Georgia would probably play number 1 for most other teams in the nation also. Once again, no offense meant in what I was saying earlier.

Ok so from first hand experience this is why scores seem higher than what they should be: the courses are really difficult, the weather always seems to be not that great, and there is a lot of pressure. So sure, the number 6 guy on Georgia might average a 76, but that is a 76 on a 7200 yard course with pretty narrow fairways and fast, firm greens, which probably has a course rating of like 75.

So basically it is one over par in a pressure tournament on a day where he probably played 36 holes. To get looked at by a school like Georgia or Stanford or any top 25 D1 you need to be in the top 100 on Junior Golf Scoreboard, regardless of handicap, etc. When it boils down to it, the top D1 schools want to see how low you can go on the hardest courses against the best possible competition.

This is not to say you can't play college golf if you're not ranked on JGS and don't have a low handicap or a lot of tournament experience. There is a school out there for every decent golfer- but like others have mentioned, make sure you pick a school first because of academics, then because of golf. Too many friends of mine have either quit or transferred because they didn't like the school or overall experience after their first golf season.

Collge golf is a lot of fun- I'm loving it, and if you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

I play on a DI team in the MAAC. I am our number one player. Scoring average this year is 75.33. Just got back from a tournament in Myrtle Beach. Brutal conditions. Shot 78-82 haha T-14 out of 78 players. It's a grind man. Scratch player in the summer....harder courses, inconsistent weather, and not in top form. How good are you? Do you play in any good tournaments? Let me know....Age? Location?

I am a junior in high school right now and I have already committed to play college golf. The kid for Georgia who averages 82 is an awful golfer. He got on the golf team because his family has money and or members at Augusta National. I have heard rumors that he will not be on the team next year

I have no idea if any of this is true, but his dad played at UGA and has been one of the best amateur players in Georgia for a long time.

If you shoot in the 70's consistently your in at most schools.

That is not anywhere close to true. There are 270 ranked DI teams in the Golfstat rankings and 292 in the Golfweek rankings. As an example I will use a school I have some knowledge of - Birmingham Southern. They are number 211 in the Golfstat & Golfweek rankings, but have 2 players with tournament stroke averages of 73.6 or better.

Like others have said there is a heck of a lot difference in a 75 tournament average and a 75 practice/qualifying average. I would be willing to put a lot of money on the fact that at least 6 or 7 players at Birmingham Southern average below 75 in practice/qualifying.

Are there DI schools were a sub-75 average would put someone at number 1? Of course, and there are probably a good many, but I definitely don't think it can be said that this would be the case at most DI schools.

I'm sorry again...I did not say a 75 scoring average at a AJGA or practice etc. I already cleared that point up but again here is what I said on that subject..."If your less than a 75 average your #1 on most teams" Is this not true?? I don't get what I am saying wrong??

So infact it is 100% true, you proved that in your post when you said "They are number 211 in the Golfstat & Golfweek rankings, but have 2 players with tournament stroke averages of 73.6 or better."

A sub 75 scoring average means you are the #1 player on probably 100% of D1 schools...I'm sorry I don't mean to come off as a "d%*k" but Your arguing with me without reading previous posts where I clearly said I was talking about college scoring average.

The last thing I'm trying to do is start an argument, I just think reading the whole post you can clearly see this has come up already.
