GolfTEC Review(s) Costs/Value Pros/Cons etc.

I know this thread is old, but I'm looking at possibly buying a plan of GolfTec. I can literally hit the GolfTec with a driver from my apt, and the couple times I have stopped by, it has not been busy. They also have a PGA Professional on staff. The kicker for me is the proximity to my apartment. I'm currently driving 15-20 minutes from work to pay $10 for a large bucket and hit for an hour. With the proximity, I can go and practice on camera whenever I want, and it is included in my fee. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Sounds great to me, wish my Golftec was as close, gotta drive 30 min to mine. If u can find the right instructor like I did, then it make sense to do. I really like going and I have seen results.

It is not cheap I will give you all that but, for me it was well worth it. My coach was great we got along and even played a couple times as friends along with him being very knowledgeable with the golf swing and club fitting as well. This was important for me bc as a WRX guy I tinker with club from time to time. All the prices are slashed in March and when you break it down in monthly payments at a bit over $100/mo with unlimited range time, lessons almost once a week with a mix of inside and on the course work, I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Especially because all the lessons are recorded and you can download them onto your computer for good. In 4 months I shot my best round of 74 after starting out struggling to break 90, but to each their own.

I've praised my experience at GolfTec a few times on this thread. It for me is the video practice, the ability to see every shot frame by frame in my own timeframe, and seeing what I feel I'm doing versus what I'm really doing. After 30+ years of the curse of a really long backswing and all the foibles it causes, I've finally been able to get that under control. Instructor has helped significantly in this, but the ability to see on a swing by swing basis what I'm doing has really clinched it. I would concur that YMMV with instructors. My current one has taught at the TPC Tour Academy at Sawgrass and is very low key and not pushy. Bottom line, my HC has gone down by 2 or 3 strokes (more if I could spend the time to get my short game in order). My distance has gone way up, picked up a good 10 to 15 yds on my playing partners and the chronic pulls that have plagued me for decades are largely gone. Much more to be fixed, but this has been the only program that really has worked for me.

I'll weigh in again. I had a bad experience in that my instructor dragged out the 5 lesson plan I had purchased. It was obvious he was trying to get me to buy a bigger package (which I would have done if I thought the first 5 lessons were helpful). As it turned out, I got much worse after the 5 lessons, and ended up switching to an instructor that works on making your swing more effective rather than trying to make your swing "match" a tour pro's. I dropped 5 strokes off my lowest score after only 3 lessons with the new guy. I believe there are a lot of people who have been ruined by obsessing over every position of their swing in slow motion (including several once prominent pros).

To be fair, I think if you got a great instructor and were able to use the video practice often, it may be worth it. I'm an hour from the nearest golftec so wasn't able to use the video practice. And after 5 lessons we didn't get past waist high on my backswing, so there was nothing I could practice anyway. If I did it again I would set expectations with the instructor upfront.

Just wanted to give an update. I had a few concerns after reading threads like this and the fact that golfTec is a S&T machine. I voiced my concerns, and they answered. The guy I'm working with is a PGA teaching professional who has been mentored all over the country by different top instructors in the top 100. I got along with him well, and his teaching style clicked for me. A big thing too was that he respected what I wanted to do with my swing. He wasn't trying to force one swing on me. My swing looks janky as s#!t currently, but it works and produces great shots. He recognized the fact that I am playing good golf, and wanted my approval for swing changes. As said previously, the practice center is 1 minute from house. I can definitely see myself getting a lot out of this. I'm really looking forward to this.

i had the 15 lesson package at golftec in the golden triangle in San Diego. I worked with an instructor named Andrew. He was awesome. I developed a hitch in my swing where I couldnt hit my 6 iron more than 150 yds and prior to developing the hitch i was hitting it 180 yds. He asked me a few questions about why I used the baseball grip and why I set up certain ways and I explained to him about breaking my wrist and how the baseball grip was most comfortable and I also explained about my knee surgery. He understood and found the best way with my restrictions to get me to hit the ball solidly again. I am playing some of the best golf to date and I have dropped my handicap from a 8.7 to a 4.3. As mentioned before you have to have a good instructor no matter where you go. I love that I can use the bays for practice and compare my swings so I can make sure that what he was trying to instill stayed. It is expensive and I am thinking of going back just to have him check to see if I am where I feel I should be or if I need to make minor adjustments. I had a great experience with them and recommend them to anyone who asks.

As a current golfer and past instructor at a GolfTEC facility here's what I would say:

-Video base instruction is very helpful BUT Golf is a game that's played outside.

-Not all Tour players have perfect swings but still posted solid rounds every week because they play the game NOT spend endless hours watching film of there swing.

Any further questions about GolfTEC feel free to PM me.

I tend to agree with most on here. The instructor is what matters. I am sure there are some great Golftec instructors and some bad ones. I personally had a bad experience and did not improve after spending thousands on multiple packages. However, I think it was more a problem with the instructor. Here are some positive and negative reviews elsewhere online:

Good luck to anyone using them. They can't guarantee lower scores any more than other good instructors.

i was able to justify the extra expense by going 2-3 times a week to practice on my own outside of lessons, instead of going to the range. at my location they didnt have trackers in every room so while my impact improved drastically my accuracy only improved slightly. i went from a 26 to about 18 in a couple months and 3 years later im down to a 14 without any further lessons so it was worth it for me.

I invested $1400 in a lesson package which included a club fitting.  It was established out of the gate during my first lesson that I had an over the top swing and was casting the club too early. ten lessons later when I started my lesson the video's showed that I still suffered from this problem.

I total agree with some of the other comments that videoing your swing is essential for identifying swing issues and gauging improvement.  That said, while my instructor only offered tips and suggestions the problem persisted.  I have worked diligently on correcting this problem using other popular on line videos and have finally corrected these issues. The initial video assessment was helpful but that's where the benefit ended.

From other sources I learned the proper mechanics and check points that need to be understood and rehearsed to fix this issue.

My club assessment was also a waste of time.  I had a particular brand in mind and we tried that model and three other brands.  The GolfTec pro recommended the Cobra based on the distance it travelled.  When I did some research it turns out that the loft on the Cobra 7 iron is 26.5 vs the G425 (my preference) was 30.  Therefore it was reasonable to assume that it would travel farther.  When I inquired about this issue I received no response which made me wonder if GolfTec were financially incented to push the Cobra line.

I decided to conclude my lessons there and walked away without completing the program.

I have 20 years experience in franchising.  As a franchise, GolfTec offer their franchisees tools and systems but rely on the expertise of the pros they hire to provide most of the swing change tips and recommendations. This formula can create inconsistencies and a wide range of customer experiences.

My recommendation would be to locate the highest rated pro in your area. You will save money and see better results.

I am starting lesson in Oct and would be interested to hear more...

Did you try multiple instructors DMac12?

What did the between lesson effort look like?

How did you like the practice time at the location to supplement your lessons?

Any other advice would be appreciated.

Did the whole Golftec thing for years.  As stated before, it was the best thing for me at the time.  Got to work with a great guy for years on end.  In the end, it is what you get out of it which is totally based on the instructor.

Money wise I think it was well worth the investment.  My swing is much cleaner now but still not great.  I went from 20+ to 15 over the past 2years.  Could've been better if I played more but hard to make improvements when constantly tinkering with the swing.  Hence my advice would be to be mindful of swing changes in season regardless of the source (golf-tec/local pro/etc).
