MadGolfer's WITB - Mp-4 UPDATE

Nice bag there buddy! Speaking of the 650 driver... I just pulled the Cinnamon 65-X out of my Cobra and is now drying in the 8.5* head. 45" even at a little over D4.5. I can't wait to hit this thing. Let's have a Mizzy party in June.

Untipped. I can't believe how lucky I got with the extraction. I thought for sure the tip would be junk after it but it was cool.

It's also how crazy the differences are between brands bottom bore to ground measurement. The length of the Cobra was 45.25" and the 650 is just at 45".

League is tomorrow so I'll be giving it a right firm Rogering. I'll take it out there and show it where the dog died. I'm going to smack this thing like it owes me money. I'm going to make it pay for any and all future and past mistakes. You know... I'm going to hit it. Hard-like. On multiple occasions. Repeatedly.

So...new PING Anser milled putter showed up today. Scrapped plans to assemble a backup bag...why would I? I did, however, find another PX Black 6.5 .350 pull to go with the one I already had. Might reshaft some old G15 fairways with them. I also sent my 7.5 G15 driver head to get set up with a DVS Tour 60x.

I did say I wasn't assembling a back up bag, right??

DUDE! I have a 6.5 that I could have given you and done the build. I've also got that DVS you could have had. Sheesh.

Still want to do the 3rd?

I have 6.5's coming out my backside! I meant two 6.5 .350 fairway-specific shafts (75 grams) that were pulls from i20 fairways. Only place they can be had is through PING. I had one pull already and found someone offering another fairway pull for about 35 bucks...so...snag! That, and I still have two regular Black 6.5 driver shafts lying around. I was worried I wouldn't be able to get the ball off the ground with that loft and that same shaft. The DVS I used has been in my closet for like 3 years. It needed to live!

Oh, and I might be swapping my 59's for 53's. :)

The 3rd is cool, but didn't JJ and Sean have something planned with you on that day?

Great setup. I wanted to love the T4s (Mizzy homer here) but just could never get past the setup with the grind on them.

Still shocks me that the 650 series was discontinued so quickly. All 3 clubs from driver, fairway, and hybrid are damn solid.

Yeah, admittedly I am not entirely sold on the T4's either. I don't think they suit my game, but can't quite place my finger on what the issue is. Got a line on some cheap SM4's, so might pull the trigger shortly. The 650's are great heads, and I totally agree with you about them disappearing so quickly. I think that was the point where Mizuno figured out the glued hosel days are over and brought in the EZ's.

I know everyone always says how much they are in love with whatever they are currently using, but honestly, the 650's are superb. The fairways are very easy to hit for compact heads, and they carry a ball pretty deep. In terms of feel and sound, the Mp Titaniums (the model before these) get the nod from me, but the 650 fw's are just as long and a bit easier to hit. They still feel and sound very solid though. Nothing not to like about a head that is essentially a "smoother" version of a TEE fairway.

The driver is a pleasant surprise. Not that I thought it wouldn't be good, just that it is a fairly friendly head for being a traditional shape with a deeper face. Very easy to hit. Catch it on the screws and it feels very soft. Nice sound, and feels great with the BB in there. The face is a little open, and I end up hitting a small cut with it most of the time. There are heads out there that might be easier to hit as long, but most of those sound and feel terrible to me. The 650 driver is very comfortable and (for me) very consistent in what it does. Great blend of distance and accuracy without sacrificing feel and sound.

I think I've figured out what it is about the T4 wedges. They're significantly smaller than like every other wedge on the market. I've got mine in the sand wedge, and I'm pretty positive now that I need a wider sole to get more effective bounce, maybe a Nike Toe Sweep or something to that accord.

I remember the first time I put one down by the ball (note I bought mine off BST before even trying it as I needed a 56) I thought WOW that thing is tiny.

I actually kind of dig the smaller profile. I had Mp-t11's previously, along with some J40 wedges (which are great, btw), and those are in the same ballpark. I don't know what it is, but I just can't get a feel for these. Distance control is all over the map.

Are you using the DG spinner shafts? A lot of guys reported suspect distance control on full swings. I don't take full swings with anything above 52 so I don't have that problem.
I actually prefer the mpt4 to anything I've tried, and I've tried many. The 60 doesn't spin as much as my previous 2 sets, but that could be technique or shaft. The t11 dug to easily for me, the mpt4 have kicked out both sets of my miura wedges and my tour gorge.

I have used those shafts in the past in different heads, and really don't like them (in fact, I still have a couple pulls in my closet if anyone is interested). But no, I have x100's in them right now.

Anyhow, I did indeed experience the distance control problem when I first tried them. I can remember sitting about 110 out in the fairway on a hot day, and intended to hit a standard shot with a gap wedge. What I got was a nuclear flyer-type shot that carried 130 over the back and smacked into a cart stopped by an adjacent green. The weird part is it came off like I did it on purpose, so people yelled at me :( , because how could you overshoot by that much unless it was on purpose, right? lol

DriverWedge also recently told me he had the same problem (his "problem" is a 150-yard sand wedge with the Spinner shaft installed, though, which I can't even begin to process let alone comment on).

Great setup. I wanted to love the T4s (Mizzy homer here) but just could never get past the setup with the grind on them.
The T4's are great wedges, for sure. I just haven't figured them out yet. The grooves and milling are all adjusted by the loft model so that we don't get crazy extra spin on certain wedges that are already higher lofted...I think I have that right. I will keep practicing with them, but my old SM4's might have to come out 'da closet.

Mad,

I experienced a similar "inconsistency" with full swings on wedges as you did. What I found was I needed to redefine my full swing wedge. Sure, I could RIP a 60* wedge 120 yards and fall over on the follow through, but where's the consistency in that?

I've also noticed it's much easier to get away with mishits on wedges (because of the loft) and not notice as much. The mishits alters both distance and spin while feeling like a solid shot, you know what I mean?

I've had a problem with casting that becomes very exaggerated when I try to swing as fast as possible. Instead I'm working to hold that lag and forward press to make good contact. I'm swinging slower, making better contact, and found much more consistency. To be completely honest and pay myself on the back a little, from the fairway with a 80 yard shot, I'm rarely outside of 10 feet with my sand wedge. Mind you I've practiced that shot on at least 6 buckets of balls alone, but nonetheless it's an awesome feeling to stick it close. Another advantage I've found with dialing back my idea of a full swing is I can now stop my wedges where they land and not have to worry about sucking the ball back and further from the flag.

Either way, I've redefined my concept of a full wedge swing, and it's helped my scores tremendously.

Great going buddy! The flagged wedge is the best feeling in golf. When I lived out in Wisconsin, the university course used to let you pay 30 bucks and stay out the whole day - unlimited balls, and it was a great range too. I would just take a couple wedges out and stay most of the day, just because of the feeling you describe. Can't do that where I am, and I miss the practice.
