Freddie's putt and his reaction was a great scene. Great win for the captains pick.

I'm not sure if he then made an additional disparaging remark toward Freddie, but regardless, Freddie pulled out a great win. Hopefully this will spark his interest in golf again for a little while.

VJ did say something along the lines of having a cart ready for Freddie at the 12th green but it was not said to be mean. It was a continuation of the barbs jokingly traded between Freddie and VJ that started at the putting green when they were warming up. DL3 took it out of context and a little too serious.

 

It was a great win. Sure, Freddie grinded like mad, but let's not forget, if VJ could putt, it could have been over long before the 18th.

 

It looked like for every four footer VJ missed, Goosen made a 40 footer!

Freddie amazes me. He overcomes a terribly bad back, awful first marriage/divorce, and a host of other issues throughout his career.

 

Wasn't he quoted somewhere that he admitted he isn't much good at 4-day tournament golf, because he gets bored and listless near the end of the tournament? It's also well known that he makes tons more money during the "silly season" playing these awful made-for-TV events, :fool: and that Fred himself makes no bones about the fact that he enjoys the money he gets from them.

 

Then...........he comes up with a huge President's Cup clutch week. Amazing guy. :ok:

The guy certainly has guts. He was soooo dispondent after the 1st round and his inability to do anything to assist Tiger. Didn't seem that he could buy a putt. He had sufficient good shots and a few putts to keep him in the singles match. Had Vijay brought anything close to his A game, he would have made short work of Couples. Whether the problem was overconfidence or yet another unhappy back, Vijay was not playing with much enthusiasm or zip. Sort of like Toms in the earlier matches. It shows to go ya -- never count a pro of Couple's stature out. The guy hung in there and got his point.

Even though I was cheering on the Internationals :fool: I thought it was great to see Freddie hole such a clutch putt. He is a great guy. I thought the matches were brilliant. Superb show of golf.

Read today where Freddie said he plans to play more and make a serious run at one more Ryder Cup team. Said he wants to earn his way on and not be a captains pick. If he can get the putter going and hit a few more fairways I think he'll pull it off. Seems to have the back somewhat under control.

Fred even said that VJ would probably beat him 8 out of 10 times they would play but today was his day. If you can ever get close enough to Fred's bag take a look at his irons and then others like Tiger etc. Freddie has a very small wear pattern on the face of his irons. The only other golfer I can recall where I saw the same wear pattern was Ben Hogan.

He did at Augusta. Normally his score wins, but Tiger had that one extra roll on the platinum. By Tigers own admission, among the many things you have to have to win a major, getting some breaks is needed too. DiMarco had one less break at Augusta, and at Whistling Straits.

from what I read in the paper today, AZ Republic, VJ said that they should gt a cart ready for Fred by the 12th hole, inferring that he would be dispatched early. DL3 said it was something that Tiger or Jack would never have said even if they were kidding. I also heard they (non american team) didn't show up for the press conference.

Have heard the line about needing breaks to win before. However, when the opponent, in this case the US team, shoots that many eagles and birdies, it's pretty hard to overcome. On the final day, most of the US team was substantially subpar through 9 -- even Freddy, while Vijay shot par for the day.

I find it amusing to hear "If so and so brought their 'A' game they would have won." I always bring 'a game', not always my best, but some kind of game. (what you guys don't like puns or word play?).

 

Glad we didn't see Frustrated Freddie and the backwards chipper (lefty wedge).

 

As for Vijay- joking or not, when he talks trash or allows it (Tiger who? hat followed by getting worked by Tiger in singles) he comes up short. He kind of bumbles his way to victory sometimes too. I wouldn't consider him a clutch performer by any means. Justin Leonard choked his way out of the PGA Championship last year more than Vijay won it.

 

It seemed like the Freddie/Vijay match had the fewest birdies/eagles as well?
