Dang Nabbit!!!

OK, Gentlemen, cast your peepers on these for me, please? Could these play somewhat similar to the Hogans? I thought the muscle was too fat and too much material was removed at the toe, but darn if they don't look like those Bobby Nichols up above!

What say you?? (of course I NEED another set of irons, yah right  )

Speaking of new acquisitions, since it is almost the end of summer I thought I would chronicle the four sets I aquired this season.
1. Split Sole VIPS that my boys got me off EBay.
$38.00
Leather grips in excellent condition.
Love the heads, don't even find them digging too much,
but, I have a dreadful case of the lefts with them. Winer
project to try and remove the grips and reshaft to more
modern standards.
2. Wilson '72 Bittonbacks purchased off Craigslist.
$50.00 which included 6 various woods, 2 putters, a bag
and pull cart.
The set I have always wanted.
Being regripped as I type. Decided not to wait on
leather grips this year for them, but will in the future.
3. Scotch Blade design Maxflis with aluminum shafts.
$3.00 at Goodwill.
In perfect playing shape including original grips.
4. Palmer Tru Matics
$12.00 Goodwill 1-8 only
$20.00 EBay 9 iron
Playable as is except 9 iron is 1 inch shorter wrt the
rest of the clubs in the set. Will reshaft in the winter.
These are the real sleepers of the lot. Like them so
Much that I may end up going leather grips on these
instead of the Dynapowers.
So, even with the cost of reshafting a couple of clubs and the regripping I will have four very very playable sets for half the cost of one new driver.
Isn't this vintage gear great!!!

Kathy - you are going to hate me - but I just found you the matching woods for those ! Same grips ... same end cap ... Reg.No 72075 vs the irons 71075 ... which being sort of sequential, suggests a perfect match to me :)

So it looks like you are in for sixty six bucks now :)

A little pricey, but here's a matching sand wedge with leather grip:

I believe the staff of the Betty Ford clinic would describe us as "enablers".

And proud!

Love that M85. Really feeling the super eye-o-matic love at the moment, and that is a doozy. Would originally have had the diamond crown decal, no? Looks nice without it before we even mention the grain. The big wide insert and crazy big flat sole is just floating my boat at the moment. Should be hitting the 693 or M43 as they are the traditional classics, but just can't resist the supers.

Well, Gentlemen, the Deed Is Done...

And I probably have ROCKS in my head, because when I heard what Mr. Penna said about store clubs back then (heads that didn't make the pro-line grade, essentially they're seconds) I talked a local Golf Buddy into using his shop for a little research project. I took two Spalding beginner irons sets that I'd found, Tournament Queen and InsertMaleProNameHere Tournament, both 3579. And when we measured the swing weights, they were all over the map, the ladies set went from B9 to D0 IIRC!!! (The men's set was better than the women's, it was D range)

So I marched home & purged the house of ANY Wilson iron that did not say "Staff" on it....

All but one, *just* one. Because like most of us, I'm a sucker for a pretty face:

MacGregor mini-haul. M43s...

Tommy Armour 693s...

And Super Eye-O-Matics...

All re-finished, all re-gripped, only 693s have original shafts, and the M43s have newer inserts with five screws, so didn't pay a lot for them and will be good playing clubs. As I was walking out with this lot under my arm, the guy said "You realise twenty-five years ago you would have had about three grand's worth of clubs under your arm?". I told him I did, bid him good day and skipped off to my car having parted with less cash than I would have paid for a putter nowadays. Haven't ripped him off mind you! Not all original and a few dinks here and there, as you can see on the toe and front of the sole-plate of the 693 driver.

Can't tell the model of the Supers, but similar size heads to my M85s. Big wide faces and the crazy big inserts. Quick radical clubs compared to the more classical 693s and M43s when you sit them next to each other.

Will eventually get around to re-doing myself, but all good playing clubs until then once I clean up the sole-plates.

And once I have cleaned off the tee flashes from the previous owner. Look at those things

! Fore right! FORE RIGHT!

Here is my Macgregor SEOM driver post re-finish. Turned out pretty good overall..

Everything about these MacGregor SEOM M80W models leans toward 1958-
the "MacGregor MT" (Diamond decal) year.

Does anyone know about Cleveland Classic stampings?

This is Payne Stewart's 3-wood, and the BC1 on the sole is interesting! Possibly Ben Crenshaw or Bill Clinton?

Tex-

The Ben Crenshaw connection to Cleveland Golf seems viable, as Roger Cleveland offered the "Ben Crenshaw" series.

The RC85 was the copy of the M85W, and Ben was using one, and the BC1 could mean their first iteration of an M85W 3 wood for him.

Remember Ben Crenshaw was involved with the "Designed By Ben Crenshaw", Cleveland Golf's 8802 style model series.

Contacted Cleveland Golf before their merging with SRIXON in order to find out more information on my LH TC-15s.

Like Wilson recently, Cleveland Classic informed me they no longer had an area responding to records of custom club stampings.

And to think 20 years earlier, Cleveland Golf called me.

As an aside-Didn't Curtis Strange have a connection with "Olde Beau" Golf Club?

rex235,

You have a great memory concerning Olde Beau. There is a testimonial from Curtis Strange on their web site, and Wake Forest is about 170 miles away, so Curtis is an icon there abouts!

Getting information on these old clubs is difficult, what with retirements, mergers, closed manufacturing facilities, and dumping of records that have occurred.

Thanks

Payne Stewart BC1 club update......

I showed it to Dave Wood, who again, as always proved a treasure chest of knowledge.

He said that "Ben Crenshaw is known as a great putter, but inside the ropes was greatly admired for his fairway wood and long iron play. Ben played a low profile MacGregor M75EOM for a long time and I worked a lot with Roger Cleveland during that time making up 3-woods for him to try in hopes of displacing that M75EOM. Your club was likely made for Ben. The BC1 was made with a hammer stamp, which appears to have indented the end of the shaft, indicating that this is the original shaft. I could see Payne, or even Norman or Price, wanting to give one of Ben's Cleveland back ups a try".

He suggested that Roger Cleveland would likely remember the club.

Now, how to ask Mr. Cleveland.........now at Callaway........about an old Cleveland club?

Those are nice! I just sold a set of Mac CF4000 irons with the black ceramic inserts last week. Making some room! Keeping my VFQ MT2 irons though. They too have the ceramic faces and the black/red crown hosels,

Love finding great iron sets, well and great persimmons too!

Stu, interested in balancing. Do you just mean getting swing weights where you want them? Or swing weight vs overall weight?
Sorry did not see this earlier. I do not mess with exact numbers on swingweight on my stuff that much. I play strictly by feel and what I call total balance is when I can feel the clubhead in all positions of the swing. usually when I talk about balance I am talking about for me. What I call balanced for me may be too head heavy for some or even too light for others. There are many number of ways to achieve this according to the weight and even flex of the shaft. I am real sensitive to weight changes and I can tell when a club has been "slugged in the hosel" or tip weighted. Again for me I absolutely can not stand a club that is tip weighted. That is why I use a lot of lead tape. Again I do not worry too much about overall weight just the right feel and loading of the shaft. Actually I am in the future going to try an experiment. I have always liked Hogan clubs but do not like Apex Shafts period absolutely nothing wrong with them but I can not get the feel and kick right for me. I am thinking of taking a set of Apexs I have and going to a soft tipped S-300. Any how that may be a winter project. Did not mean to be misleading on the balance thing. If I am doing some one else's clubs I go about things differently of course to match them to their needs
