Rory Mcilroy Strong Iron Lofts

Does anyone know or have a good guess why Rory Mcilroy has his irons 1 degree strong? It surprising because looking at some of the other long guys: Rickie, Tiger, and Adam Scott all play their irons weaker to hit it higher or get more spin.

As far as he hits it I can't believe he strengthens them to hit it farther. All I can guess is that he wants to bring his ball flight down a bit.

Thoughts?

Probably to lower his ball flight. That would be my best guess. He hits it to the moon where they are now so I imagine they would be even higher at standard specs

Probably just simply his preference on how he wants his distance and gaps. The numbers on the bottom of the club mean nothing to him or other pros. A 7i 2* strong has the same loft as a 6i 2* weak. I don't think it's an accurate explanation so say that longer guys, or the names you provided, simply play weak lofts to hit it higher with more spin. All about gaps.

He just started to playing 4 wedges this year. His first five years on tour he played a 3 iron and 3 wedges. They went from a 46 PW to a 54 sand wedge. That's a huge gap and by playing his sand wedge a degree stronger than normal that gap is even larger than it would be with standard.

I just don't understand why you would want to make your gaps on you scoring clubs that large just to get the ball flight down a little on your irons.

For real? Why do people always have to say stuff like this on these forums.

No where did I say I didn't think it wasn't the perfect setup for his game. I'm just trying to understand why he plays with the clubs the ways does.

He wants to hit specific distances with each club...

He is a high ball hitter.

The VR Pro Blades are atleast 1* maybe more weaker than players clubs. 6i is 31*

Its just awesome that he plays pure blades with a project x 7.0 shaft and still hits the ball as pure and high as he does. Amazing sound off the clubface.

Thanks. I just looked up the ap2's and the 6-PW are all 1 degree weaker than the cb's and mb's....I had no idea.

I agree that's its unbelievable how he can hit his irons so high with so much spin with that setup.

Do you understand how he does get so much more spin and height that most other pros when he comes so shallow into the ball?? (I know it's not as shallow as it's been in the past, but still very shallow)

1. High Left Shoulder allows adding loft to iron despite keeping forward shaft lean.

2. Squat & Jump players [Rory / Tiger] always seem to launch the ball higher than Head on Platter players.. whenever i tried this technique it added to my height but increased my inconsistency of contact... kids who start really young can be super consistent in this squat-jump swing as its wired into their movement patterns.

3. Swingspeed = Height & Spin... probably obvious when you go to any normal golf course and see the people around you play

4. Shallow AOA

5. Pure Contact

I would venture to guess because it works.

I don't think Rory is technical enough (yet, and hopefully never) to really worry about much beyond what simply works for him.

My post wasn't intended to put you down. I just think we (as amateur golfers) need to start putting more focus on what works for us rather than paying so much attention to what works for another individual. Rory's swing isn't text book. It's beautiful to watch, much like Fred Couples' swing, but it's not perfect. He's after what works for him individually, like you and I should be as well.
