College Golf - International Player (NEW QUESTIONS)

how to go about it?

Hi all, this is gonna sound cheesy, but ever since i started playing golf, I have wanted to play college golf in the USA. the problem is, I live in New Zealand, a couple islands no one has heard of. I guess im asking for information about international college golfers. This is all alien to me as NZ colleges dont "do" golf. Does anyone have any reccomendations or people to contact about getting in the loop in terms of college golf?..I hope I worded that ok, and any comments will be greatly appreciated, thanks

Well you're going to need a resume. Any tournaments you've played, finishes in those tournaments, etc. Also, being that you're not likely going to be seen by any coaches, a swing video would probably be a nice addition.

 

Thats in regards to the coaches, but obviously if you're coming over here for schooling you need to have the academics down too. You'll need to take the SAT or ACT as they are almost always required at schools in the states.

 

Start with that, then research some schools you think might be a fit. Once you feel you can make a case start sending out emails to college coaches (their email addresses are available in the PING college golf guide, which you can buy online at www.collegegolf.com. Its also very helpful with the "what you need to do" part)

Thanks for the advice man, i dont really have a tournament resume as such, but thats my goal for this year :). I will look into the college guide. What level of golf will make the grade? Im 16 years old, in 6th form at school (Junior year???) and have a 3 handicap. Hope this helps. Thanks.

I wish it was that simple...Handicap doesn't matter. I know some kids who are "+3" that don't have tournament averages under 80. Its all about how you play under pressure in the bigger events.

Hi guys, sorry about the old thread. I've done alot of research since this post, but I still have a few questions.

 

1) What is the timeline for colleges in the US? i.e when they start during the year.

 

2) In the tournament resume, how many tournaments should be included? I ask this as tournament golf is scarce in New Zealand.

 

3) What colleges are typically the strongest? the PING college guide doesn't state the top colleges for golf.

 

So, If anyone has any help, It'd be great.
