San Diego before Thanksgiving

Recommended Posts

It turns out I will be in the San Diego area the week of Thanksgiving and I am wondering whether I should bring my stocks.

On the Monday and/or Tuesday before Thanksgiving I have a pass and wonder where I should play.

How hard is it to get on Torrey Pines (either side) as a single on a weekday?

Are there other courses in the area (SD, OC or LA) that I should consider playing. I am more concerned with getting on than cost.

Thanks in advance.

Here is the calendar for Torrey Pines. It appears there is the Women's Club on the North on Tuesday morning.

I played Maderas last Friday and overall it's in good shape.

Depending on where you're staying in San Diego, based on the courses suggested:
- Barona: East of Downtown
- Torrey: North of Downtown
- Maderas: Northeast of Downtown
- Golf Club of California Fallbrook: Even further north than Maderas
- Aviara: North of Torrey

Driver: TaylorMade Qi10 9*

Fairways: TaylorMade M1 (2017) Aldila Black; Callaway Epic Flash 7 wood

Irons: Cobra KING Forged Tec Irons Steelfiber i110cw

Wedges: Ping Glide 2.0 54*; Callaway JAWS Full Toe 58*

Putter: TaylorMade Spider Tour

Ball: Srixon Z-Star XV

Maderas in just "good shape"? Its been awhile since I played there, but it has always been pristine every time I teed up there. Has something happened to it?

I've seen it in better shape before, but nothing to complain about. A few fairways had some rough patches, but greens were rolling smoothly.

I was out at Maderas last Friday as well. I thought the course was in good shape. The areas that weren't pristine were never really in play. I've played twice and this was the better of the two times.

Here's a photo from the back tee of hole 16 that day.

Played both Journey at Pechanga and Redhawk GC in Temecula recently; both are in wonderful shape. But I wouldn't suggest driving there from San Diego though. It would take too much time, due to 78 & 15 rush hr traffic.

I ended up playing both Torrey Pines South and North.

Enjoyed both, and got on as a single quickly and easily (too easily on North as I had no time to warm up).

The South was definitely harder, with US Open level rough; hard to find balls, easy to lose...North was very nice; rough was reasonable/ Greens on both courses were great.

Would definitely play again, but next year may try the others that have been suggested here (Aviara, Maderas, Steele Canyon, etc).
