MD/VA/DC Golfers - Ten Seconds or Less

Recommended Posts

I had a round earlier this year where I shot 38 (+2) on the front at Blue Mash playing blues for the first 3 holes then whites (caught up to a group as a single). Based on that I could go 75 from the reds. I also shot 47 (+12) on the back that same round, so I could also shoot 95.

I also think a shotgun start may help a few people out if we aren't starting on hole 1. It's a tough stretch to start a round, and if you don't have a good mental game it can hurt more than the score. If I shoot +4 or 5 over those 3 I feel like the round is sunk. If I shoot +1 I sometimes feel like I've gotten the tough part of the course out of the way and can let up a bit, which isn't good.

I'm still saying 78 for now. But for anyone above the low/mid single digit caps, we are losing a lot of our strokes through bad swings that would be bad swings no matter what club we have in our hands (fat, thin, etc). Versus the lower cap guys who aren't making birdies because they hit it to 20 feet instead of 10. Basically, proximity isn't as important for higher caps (relatively).

Lots of potential in that swing, JKC. Find a reputable instructor nearby, and commit to what they're teaching you. With their guidance and diligent work (which you seem more than willing to put in), you should see your handicap plummet into the single digits pretty quickly.

Thanks! I'm seeing Leighann Albaugh tomorrow. I hear good things so I'm really looking forward to it.

since likely going to be a shotgun start, and we're all guaranteed playing from the same tees, anyone else besides me want to try 100% random pairings vs. "typical" groupings?

At the risk of sounding like a complete dbag, I'd like to see low guys all go out together in 1-2 groups.

I agree. What a dbag.

Am I the only one that thinks NW has significantly more accessible - if not outright easier - green complexes than BM? I dont know, I'd give maybe one or two people a chance at going under par.

I've played NW on days when the course was baked out and the greens were running fast - and it was still not terrible at all.

I've played BM under similar conditions and some of the greens were basically impossible,

I think it depends. One or two people max I'd give a chance to. If you have a bad day off the tee - you are still going to get yourself into trouble, no matter what. You still have to hit it somewhat near the fairway.

Absolutely. I always struggle at Blue Mash because the greens are much more elevated and/or protected than Northwest Park or the other MoCo munis. As a low ball hitter, I tend to run the ball up onto greens, and there's just no way to do that on a lot of holes at Blue Mash.

sorry, this is untrue.

there is an opening in the front of the green for you to run it up on the majority of holes from the proper angle.

#1, #2, #3, #4, #6, #7, #9, #10, #11, #12, #14, #15, #16

...

with all that said, from the wrong angle, yeah, you're F'ed.

I'm an awful driver of the ball. I routinely manage to find ways to not have a penalty in a round on tight courses. This is an overstatement but it feels like penalties are a result of poor strategy in this challenge. The only shot on the whole course I'll "take on" is playing 8 as a par 3.

Like 6. Hit it a mile right. It's just a par 4 played from the rough with essentially no risk. Maybe you good drivers aren't used to planning literally every course around the concept of "how do I avoid penalties"

it wasn't if it was the right play, it was if he could.

e.g. running a ball up onto #5 at NW isn't the right play, but you can, from either side of that gaping maw of a bunker that guards the front.

Maybe I'm just nuts and have played Blue Mash too much, but I don't see it being much harder than Northwest from the reds. Different, but not harder.

Greens: I think NW has a few pin positions that are far harder than anything at Blue Mash. BM has a lot more obvious breaks, but there's less subtle stuff that is going to trick you. The greens are also a little smaller (or at least seem it), which is a benefit once you are them. I think this is pretty close to a toss up.

Around the greens: BM is definitely tougher. Like THDC says, you have to be able to hit a higher lofted chip shot to play well at Blue Mash. If you don't like chipping with your sand or lob wedge, it can be brutal. I'm more comfortable with the high lofted shot than the low runner though because I play a lot at Worthington and Blue Mash where you have to play it. Main difference is that BM seems to have more difficult bunkerage greenside.

Length: BM is 200 yards shorter than NW from the reds.

Par 4s: As I said before, NW had 2 par 4s where the tees didn't change the approach, so it took away the real advantage of playing up a box there. Add in the shorter length, and I think these cancel out the added difficulty around the greens.

I think the biggest difference is that you can't roll it up to the green on any of the par 5s at Blue Mash, while you can on just about every 5 at Northwest. #5 and #18 are elevated with rough all around, and #9 and #12 bring water danger in to play if you try that. You can't just blast away with your 2nd shot.

^ strategic genius here. #6 is a par 3 champ. lol

I meant 5.

i know, i know, i'm just tweaking your chode.

i myself have put it in #3 fairway from #5 tee many a time (including my last time out). with that strategy, there is a long fairway bunker that now comes into play from the reds tho.

That's a cop out answer.

He could do a lot of things. He could play his own one club challenge and hit driver for every shot and putt.

I'm awarding the points to THDC. You know he's right and you are just mincing words.

BS. i do not know he's right. he said there's just no way to do that. i also said he was right, provided he was coming in from a funny angle.

if you want to play the hypothetical game, fine, he could also learn how to hit a normal pitch shot by then. :)

sully's been beaten so many times and so badly by THDC, he's got a version of battered wife stockholm syndrome.

Massively huge props to JJ for the hard case. My clubs are in perfect shape.

My clothes suitcase (I would imagine) got stuck on a belt somewhere and had a massive hole torn out of it. The entire upper, right corner was torn off. The zippers to open the case were ripped off and actually found inside my bag, and the metal framing was bent like a pretzel. Luckily I pack in an overlapping / laid out style so one of the top shirts kind of fell out / plugged the hole and nothing came out. Looks like I'll be getting some new luggage on southwest's dime.

This doesn't really do it justice since its from the top angle, but still:

Dang. I didn't realize that the Cobra drivers use a different size wrench than every other manufacturer. I've played Callaway, Titlelist, and TM using the same torque wrench for a couple years now. Any superfriends have an extra one?

pm me your address, I'll ship you one. Unless you want to meet near Arundel Mills and pick it up.
