So, in addition to getting paid for his military service, he seeks further handouts from the gov't. I think we've identified the problem.

Wow, thats an awesome statement. An 18yo American joins the military, and chooses to give his life for his country. Starting pay is less than minimum wage, offset only by the fact that housing and galley services are provided. If he is single. If he is married, he gets a small amount more than his single counterpart. To say that military members are seeking handouts is a far reach. I dont think most who apply for WIC/Foodstamps deploy for years on end, or go into combat. Thats really big of you. I joined the Navy, because that is the career path that I chose. I work in Nuclear power, submarines and Aircraft carriers. The sailors that I have had the pleasure of serving with are the finest americans that I know. People who will jump in front of YOU to protect you from a gunman in a movie theatre, or any other venue. Thats the kind of Americans that we have serving. (we all arent perfect, but you get the point) Many of the civilians posting here obviously have little to no information regarding the pay and compensations of the military. Do some homework, and educate yourselves. Its not much, and our Congress is doing an outstanding job of scraping away at the remaining ones. I dont get angry at people who make comments like this, I feel sorry for you. Enjoy the great life that the Americans who serve and paid the ultimate price provide you with.

I felt really good about that shot....
Until I hit it.

Choices like mine and others are the only thing preventing nice people like yourself from being drafted. I would love to meet you in person, I highly doubt you would have the manhood to own up to what you are typing. Type away fool! It's been paid for.

I'm sorry that you've reached a period of adulthood and still think this way. I have no problems sharing my opinions, what would you do, try to kick my a**? Is that some alternative way of dedicating your life to protecting our freedoms? Freedoms like thought, ideas, speech, etc.?

It might be wise for you to look in the mirror or read what you're typing, because you're coming off a tad bit contradictory. You did it all for us one second, then another second you're threatening someone because they have a different opinion than you do. That doesn't sound like someone who chose a career path based off his dying devotion to protect American principles of freedom.

Just remember one thing. Less than 1% of Americans have been willing to make the extreme sacrifice to serve and protect the freedoms that you enjoy. I won't threaten violence upon you for disparaging my sacrifice and the sacrifice of my family, so you can state your opinion. Just remember, don't try to talk negatively of my sacrifice and I won't talk negatively of your willingness not to protect the same rights that you take for granted.

Many Americans don't serve because they are medically ineligible. Many Americans can't serve because they have criminal records that eliminate their eligibility to serve. There are also many Americans who don't serve because they have been pampered their entire lives, live off of their parents fortunes, and don't have the courage to serve their fellow American. Which ever the case, it doesn't bother me. It only matters that my chosen sacrifice isn't taken for granted, not the ultimate sacrifice given by my fellow brothers and sisters in arms.

Wow, a lot of people talking about a country that they are not a citizen of. Remember to clean your own house before talking about somebody else's. Every Korean is required to serve two years. This isn't even the only country that has conscription. Does anybody really believe that the ROK Army will put him in an infantry unit? He may be rich and he may be a star athlete for South Korea, and for this he will most likely be assigned as a KATUSA (Korean Augmentee to the US Army). Because of this he will be given a cush job and still be allowed to practice a lot.

In case many have forgotten, South Korea and North Korea are still at war. They only have an armistice signed, so one shot fired by either side will start the war back up. Wouldn't you think that if a country is still at war with another country, then they should maintain a standing army? Learning history will help anybody make a rational and intelligent comment or argument.

Explain with valid facts why he should be excluded from service when every young, non-effluent man should be required to serve?

LOL! I read this and spit my coffee back up through my nose! There's a difference between affluent and effluent. A big one.
