with the welfare and real unemployment rate so high, coupled with the amount of people on food stamps and gov't assistance here in the US and the fact that a lot of people want things for free or demand $15/hr to flip burgers (which just passed here in NY but doesn't take affect until 2021), military service should be required here as well.
The only thing in that is that you'd get a lot of unmotivated untalented people in in. The strength of the military is most want to be there and truly want to serve their country. I think most people in the we want free things committee don't feel the same way.
Getting up before dawn, running 10 miles, and getting a bit of discipline has a strange way of motivating people.
Very very true, all I'm saying is I'd rather have 10 highly motivated people that want to be there than 20 that have to be taught to love what they are doing. I have the highest respect for the men and women in the military.

Well. There are some facts missing or incorrect here, so I will try.

1. If you earn medal at olympic, you are exempt. Bae has requested delaying his military service until 2016 olympic so that he can have a chance at olympic. The request is denied and his immediate service is ordered due to his age.

2. I hope laws will allow athletes to postpone their service until more later age. Currently I think maximum is 30 and Bae is about this.

3. He will/shall not go serve in KATUSA. KATUSA may be relatively better way to conduct military service in ROK, but there are certainly other positions where he can practice and play fron time to time. Being stationed in USFK (US force in Korea) cannot let you know all about Korea military service system. It's complicated system.

No offense to previous posters at all. Just wanted to make facts straight. I appreciate your service while in USFK. I have good memories serving as a Katusa.

Incredibly well compensated? Thats litterally the most ignorant thing Ive ever read here and we swim in a sea of stupid.

Luckily for you the grunts out there serving in hostile places, willing to sacrifice life amd limb dont care that you're an Unappreciative toad. They do their job knowing privileged, conspiracy deluded weasels such as yourself will never thank them. Thank whatever God your blood earned freedom allows you to thank that they dont think even a little like you do.

Wow, a lot of people talking about a country that they are not a citizen of. Remember to clean your own house before talking about somebody else's. Every Korean is required to serve two years. This isn't even the only country that has conscription. Does anybody really believe that the ROK Army will put him in an infantry unit? He may be rich and he may be a star athlete for South Korea, and for this he will most likely be assigned as a KATUSA (Korean Augmentee to the US Army). Because of this he will be given a cush job and still be allowed to practice a lot.

In case many have forgotten, South Korea and North Korea are still at war. They only have an armistice signed, so one shot fired by either side will start the war back up. Wouldn't you think that if a country is still at war with another country, then they should maintain a standing army? Learning history will help anybody make a rational and intelligent comment or argument.

Explain with valid facts why he should be excluded from service when every young, non-effluent man should be required to serve?
I think after his initial induction it is very likely he will be given a posting at a military golf course where he will be practising hard in between playing rounds with the top brass. Golf is huge in Korea, I'm sure it is just as popular with military personnel. It will definitely set him back taking 2 years away from the tour, but it's not like he won't touch a club in that time. I hopeit doesn't stunt his growth as a player too badly.

I almost choked on my tongue when I read this reply... Almost 30 percent of all enlisted families are on some type of federal aid program. WIC, SNAP, you know the deal, plus when the service member is deployed he or she incurs expenses while they are away from the family... try that for say, 4-6 deployments lasting upwards of 14-16 months. Well compensated is an absolute gross exaggeration. But don't worry... Big Brother is here to protect you, and you constitutional right to spew vitriol speech.

He will definitely be assigned to KATUSA... probably assigned to Osan or Yongsan. Man... I have spent time training with the ROK Marines in Taegu. They literally beat the snot out of the lower ranking guys if they even stutter while giving a post briefing. Watched a sergeant pummel a kid for messing up... the offender was posted with one of my younger kids, after we had to witness this... my kid whispered to me... thank god I'm an american.

Yep he will be in the KATUSA ranks for sure and I am sure he will see plenty of golf courses.

I'm surprised they dont have some special provision for foreign ambassadors or something. Not that what Bae is doing is life saving being a golfer and all, but him say, winning a major, might do good things for golf in Korea. Representing your country in a large global sport can have some benefits to its national programs etc. Which is i'm guessing why they have the provision for Olympic Medals. You'd think maybe they'd extend it to other high level athletes

Anyway, that's the law there so i guess he has no choice.

FWIW my brother is Canadian military and is fairly well compensated and gets good benefits. They seem to take pretty good care of him. People who serve overseas also i believe get fairly nice bonuses upon return (they also aren't paying for things while there obviously) so if you manage your finances well you can do OK, though of course the sacrifice they make putting themselves in that kind of danger can't be expressed in monetary value.

It's too bad if our friends to the south aren't as well taken care of for their military service. Not saying people here are millionaires or anything, but they seem to be able to live comfortably and get long term benefits

The only thing in that is that you'd get a lot of unmotivated untalented people

I agree that a volunteer military yields much better results.

That's why you have good senior enlisted people to keep those types in line.

Yeah, Just Let other people put their lives at stake in order to defend your right to freely worship your god and protect your family. You may or may not sound selfish.

You act like they do it for free. They're incredibly well compensated, let's not forget that part.

Some of us don't follow the brainwashing culture of the military and all that comes with it. Some of us don't agree with multi-trillion dollar military regimes that politically control the world.

Thankfully, I know not all military men and women think this way. Enjoy your lifelong benefits, even if you're ungrateful for them.
Stupid uninformed comment number two. You are free to say that you wouldn't serve but just stop with the uninformed bs. You obviously have no clue ( not uncommon here) but your lack of knowledge or understanding is reaching critical mass.
I know plenty of military men and women who willingly push their children into the military due to the advantages it provided them throughout their careers. Again, my point is that people don't do it for free, that is a fact. Everyone who serves gets paid, their families get paid, and most likely better than they'd make elsewhere for a career. If you don't like that opinion and the facts I've stated, that is one thing. To call me stupid and uninformed is another entirely different point that is really sad.

You know nothing. Governments, politicians, and big money control the world. 80% of the worlds military forces are used as pawns, the other 20% are military regimes.

My next door neighbor is a E-4 Army with WIC & Foodstamps. Until you make E-6 and above, you are living low rent.
