Orlando - Grand Cypress - new vs. n/s/e

Golfweek has the new (#22) and North/South (#24) as top courses you can play in FL.

Taking a trip in a couple weeks, anybody played both and have a preference or recommendations?

Comparisons?

Both courses should be in great shape. I actually like the New Course. I've played the N/S/E once, can't remember which of the nines I've played. I also liked that as well except for that one par-5 where the green is on a small, but steep hill.

The New Course is 'designed with St. Andrews in mind.' If there's no wind, it's very easy. The only hole I don't care for is #14 because the green design is almost impossible if the flag is on the top shelf. If you're looking for a confidence builder, take the New Course when it's not windy.

The N/S/E is a traditional parkland layout. I think there are some more unfair shots there, but overall I enjoyed it. I think the New Course drains better.

The New Course at Grand Cypress is best enjoyed on a cool, breezy day, and those days don't happen this time of year. Try December thru February instead.

Can't go wrong anywhere at Grand Cypress. Both courses are very different. N/S/E which the N/S combo is the true challenge for that side is a demanding course with some very undulated greens, its a target golf setup for sure. The New Course is great fun. You can play all sorts of different shots. The greens on the new are the hardest and fastest on the property. I am lucky enough to live 10 minutes from there and have never found the courses in nothing less than pristine condition. If you can play both thats even better... you get a fun round and a challenging one.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I'm getting in three rounds while I'm there, doing Streamsong blue, Grand Cypress - new, and maybe World Woods

Can't go wrong with either course at Grand Cypress -

The New course looks easy, but does not play easy. It has open fairways but a LOT of bunkers. The greens can get very quick and there is NO flat spot on them. It plays about 6700 from the tips.
The N/S/E courses are challenging - depending upon the tee box you play from.

Regardless of your choice, you will have blast playing the courses, just call ahead and find out if they are going to punch the greens. PLUS - try to get early morning tee times as it almost rains every afternoon.

the new course is very short even from the tips when there's no wind. otherwise it's actually very "fun".

why not play streamsong red? IMHO, that course is much much better than blue.

Played the New course yesterday.... Don't often leave Disney to golf when there but I'm so glad I did..... I've played St Andrews and there are many similarities. I loved the 1 and 18 complex... Loved the double greens, the green complexes, the variety of lines off the tee and the fairway areas not visible from where you stand on several holes.... I agree with the post above, the pin on 14 was on that shelf..... I didn't feel the bunkers were too penal, I enjoyed playing to areas I thought were safe only to find out I didn't have an easy next shot, and I enjoyed the varying lies..... Air it out off the tee, avoid the bunkers, and make sure you hit the green because getting up and down is no bargain!! Great fun..... And that's why I play golf.

Yes, there are some similar features to TOC, and when in Orlando GCNew is a fun choice, but to be clear, GC New doesn't play anything like TOC. It is not a similar experience or a similar round of golf.

Correct... The turf is nowhere near the same, the bunkers don't swallow a ball from 30 yards away, the grasses aren't the same, they have to battle water with drainage areas, etc....

But there is a familiar look that I appreciated and brought me to reflect on my experience at TOC.....

I played the Old Course in Oct of 2014, playing the GC New Course on Sat Oct 31st and looking forward to it as I played it only once before about five years ago and enjoyed it very much. Of the 70+ courses I played during my four years in England, the Old Course was the biggest disappointment. I'd much rather play the New/Jubilee/Edens or even The Dukes...better yet my first choice would be to drive 45 mins and play the Gleneagles Kings Course.

Just got back from Central Florida, played Championsgate Country Club, Southern Dunes, and Grand Cypress New Course...all for $50 each with a cart. By far the most impressive was Southern Dunes...it has matured beautifully over the past 22 years. On the other hand, just as The Old Course at St Andrews was not very impressive, my second round on the New Course at Grand Cypress was disappointing as well...wish I had played the North/South or a different course altogether. If I had to live in the area again, I'd be a member at Southern Dunes in a heartbeat.
