2 WOODS

Recommended Posts

I have been very disappointed in my performance with my drivers as of late. Found a couple of 2 woods that were old friends and after a few scotches came up with an idea that sounded like a good plan. I extended them to 43 inches put new grips on and got ready for the next day..13 degrees sure is easier than 10.. Great height on flight and easy to work shape. I chose the 1955 macgregor m65w 2 wood as my new Driver. Distance seems the same as drivers, but with more air time and a little less roll. I like it! Any of you fellows traveled this road? What are your thoughts?

Sounds like a good adaption - I used to play a wooden 2 wood, off the tee and the fairway. In a strong wind it was a good club to use if teed low, half swing with a closed face - this was 40 years before TW's stinger. The MacGregor sure is a small club, now if you can match it up with the same vintage 4 wood, that would make a fine combo.

Current Bag:

TM R7 425 driver 11.5

Cleveland Launcher #4 wood

Cobra King Hyper Steel #7 wood

BB Heavenwood # 9 wood

Titlelst DCI Black O/S irons 7 8 9 W SW, Lovett chipper

McGregor putter

Titleist Tour Soft balls

In fact, here's the 2 wood from the set. I have never seen better grain on a 2 wood. Perfectly oriented micro-grain. It has so many growth rings you can't even see or count them. All the fairway woods have the same quality blocks. They look like they came from the same tree! This set is the next one I will be restoring.

The M-65 is also one of MacGregor's cooler looking heads, IMO, because of the "swan neck". the shaft is a little softer which might make it easier to hit. It was marketed as a club for senior golfers or a club for classic, smooth swingers of the club/

Still have mine from my old set. I never used this much. Mainly the 3, and either the 4 or 5. The lack of humidity here in Montana has not been kind to the 5.

Volkman is not in my golf lexicon. That club was probably made before WWII. The shaft was not depicted, but I would guess it is not chrome plated.

CHARLEY PENNA

Tim/ Charley-

This club has late '30s all over it.

With a name like "Volkman", it's most definitely pre-WWII..probably why the name wasn't used...

The Will Sime BAP design style cross hatching of the face, along with the 5 screw domino pattern insert, and a prototype sweepback soleplate...

Even the "2" stamp on the sole is different...more Kenneth Smith than MacGregor.

To me, it's a museum piece.

  • 1 month later...

Went to the range to test out a couple of new clubs. The 2 wood and it's 4 wood cousin.

First tee ball with the 2 wood I found myself saying out loud, " What a majestic ball flight." From this day forward the club shall be referred to as Mr. Majestic. A high soaring ball flight with a slight draw with my normal swing.

The 4 off the deck ain't too shabby either, so I'm calling it Ain't 2.

Charles Bronson approves of your renaming the Fred Haas 2W.

Sorry Randy, but the setup was there for the picking.

Laissez les bons temps rouler!
