Too bad, sadly a number of my vintage woods have suffered a similar fate. Lack of care and extreme Canuck temperature changes are not kind to wooden clubs.

Yeah, it was a sad ending to a beauty of a club. I have an Armour Black Scot coming that I plan on giving some love to for a freshening up before playing.

I just found the matching 5 and 7 woods, and a set of irons including a 77 and a 99 I am assuming a chipper and a wedge?

I am missing just the 8 iron. Man those Kenneth Smith clubs are gorgeous! Man talk about custom! Customers name in the clubs, metal ferrules, beautiful grips and end caps. You don't see anything these days with that type of quality and detail. The irons are stainless too. What year is your two wood from? is it 60's?

I play a 1 1/2 wood as my driver right now for some of the reasons mentioned in this thread

Warbird sole was later on in their evolution, the original S2H2 was about the size of a persimmon, really really solid clubs some came stock with the EI-70 shafts.

Played one of those for a little while, sometime mid to late 90's is when they came out. I've got the Driver that matches your 2 wood. It has a RCH 96 firm flex shaft @ 9* loft. Never hit a ball! :)

Played a little this evening with 2 finds from a thrift store today The Hogan 2 wood and Baffy, The 2 wood has an adila gold stiff and the baffy has an Apex 4 graphite shaft, really great clubs. Used the baffy on a 180 yard par 3 and hit it over the green a bit

On a short par 240 yards hit the 2 wood 10 feet away. It is dry here and I hit it 3 more times , none that well but all were over 200 and in the fairway

I had the tour spoon from the baffy set. If I remember, it had 13.25 degrees.

Dredging this post up again with a couple of new arrivals. They’ve both been refinished (and the 693 reshafted) the M70 a little too enthusiastically - pretty thick poly and the face has been filed or sanded pretty smooth - but in these parts you can’t afford to be picky!

My 2 woods above came from a bunch of Mac woods that fluffy and I obtained this week. There’s also a really nice looking M43 2 wood in amongst them but I let fluffy take that one :-)

Missed this thread the first time around. When I first started playing classic clubs, it didn't take long to figure out that it was hard to elevate a persimmon driver, especially with a Pro-V1 instead of a balata ball. So like the OP, I started to use 2 woods and teeing off became a much more enjoyable part of the game.

 

I was finally able to migrate back to an actual driver after I purchased the MacGregor catalog that had all the club literature from the 30s to the 70s. I found out that later model persimmon drivers came in higher lofts. Some as high as 12*. The AT2W I currently play is 11* and has just enough loft to work for me. I would love to pick up an AT3W with 12* of loft but the original shafts are too soft, and I don't have any way to reshaft them with a proper shaft for me.

Bit of an old thread. But if using a 2 wood off the tee do you treat it the same as a 3 wood and tee it low or like a driver and tee it so about 1/2 ball above the crown height to hit up on the ball?

Depends on the depth of the face and whether you are trying hit it in the air or keep it low.

Well went out with it after posting. Found that seemed best if some but less than a half of ball above the crown. Didn't measure it. Slightly lower also ok.

Higher than that led to tendency to sliced flight.
