Baseball grip....Woooooow...

I haven't seen a lot of these, but I do have two friends who use this grip and both are decent players: one a 7 hdcp and the other about a 5 or 6. Since I have never experimented with it I am curious: Instructors on the forum, do you find this might encourage a flip?

 

I'm no instructor, but generally the extra contact b/w your right hand w/ the club allows your right hand to dominate very easily. The overlapping and interlocking grips have certain elements that help prevent over use of the right hand. However, I think proper application of the extra force available by using yoru right hand, thought difficult to control, can add a lot of power (see Tommy Gainey and his half-swing/half uppercut motion).

I started out with the baseball grip and my current teacher uses it. I found most of my shots were pulling left. I switched to interlocking and now most of them drift right! Now if only there was a way to mix them!

I think the degree of success one has with each grip type depends on their individual swings. I seem to recall reading somewhere, and you can try this yourself, that the interlocking group has the least amount of wrist action (relatively) while the 10-finger grip has the most. The overlapping or Vardon grip falls somewhere in the middle. We are not talking extremes here, but as we all know it doesn't take much in the golf swing to have an impact.

I used 10 fingers grip before I took my lessons...the instructor adjusted my grip to overlap...I now have lot more control over the club and ball. With 10 fingers grip, it would be hit or miss...but then again, I didn't try 10 finger grip since instructor changed it all up...

 

I assume 10 finger grip is baseball grip??

I played baseball for years before even starting golf. As a result, when I first picked up a golf club the ten finger grip jus seemed natural to me and I never changed it. Now a couple of years later, I am down to a 6 handicap and it is improving everyday.

I have played and still play both grips Overlap and Ten Fingers (Baseball) and play to a +1.

 

The differences for me by the shot type are as follows, I do not switch grips in a round but during certain times of the year I am more comfortable with one or the other:

 

Driver:

10:

There is no question I hit the ball longer with 10 Fingers. I hit a flatter draw that is very long. Working a fade 10 fingers is much harder.

OL:

Higher ball flight and workability for fades and draws. I do not hit it as long this way but it does not worry me.

 

Irons:

10:

Flatter flight and a harder hit. The long irons come off too flat sometimes, but still have spin. Short irons are easy and very accurate this way.

OL:

The extra wrist hinge helps me elevate the longer irons, and it feels like a smoother swing. I can hit a high fade easier this way.

 

Wedges:

10:

Very easy distance control, and lower flight.

OL:

The extra hinge makes flops and sand shots a little easier to hit

 

Overall, I can play either way, sometimes I feel smoother with OL and swing a bit easier and softer tempo. 10 Fingers makes me feel a little more aggressive, but sometimes that can wreck a decent a round.

 

Both are viable ways to hold a club. I think it was Hogan that said he wanted 2 Right hands in his Modern Fundamentals Book.

i have women sized hands (cadet small glove size actually) and the baseball grip is the only way i can hold onto the club. anything else feels like it will fly out of my hand.

I think you have hit one of the most important aspects of the baseball grip: it is really the only option for people with small hands.

I just switched from the 10 finger to the interlock this spring. I had tried before to change and couldn't get used to it. This spring I was hooking the ball terrible and switched to try to stop my right hand from pushing the club face closed. Now after several months I am back to hooking my long irons. After every hooked shot the club is rolled over in my left hand and if I return it to address it is way closed. I thought the grip was the answer now I am not sure.

 

But anyway now I feel very comfortable in the interlock and feel like I am striking the ball better, except when I have to use the long irons.

I got to play this grip yesterday for 9 holes. After a couple of hooked shots, I found a groove and started hitting pretty good shots from the fairway and the rough. I had a little fade going. But honestly, the best swings were getting up and down from around the green. I was very happy with my game overall. It was easier to release the club and (at least yesterday) made the game easier. Now If I could sink a putt.....
