How to get rid of them?

Hello guys,

probably the most severe weakness of my golf swing is that my back swing is way too long. I am right handed and can often see the club with my left eye, as it is already pointing towards the ground on my left side. At the same time, my left arm is not straight anymore, but clearly crooked. Several Pros have identified this to be the cause of many of my ball striking problems (inconsistent, over the top, early release, weak slice).

My proplem now is that I just can't stop it. I often hear the advice "do half a swing", but even that will not work once I try to actually hit a ball. I sometimes does work in a practice swings, but only there. I think that I have pretty decent control of the first part of my backswing, but at some point I totally loose the feeling and cannot stop or control the movement. I have been working on this for almost a year now - without real success.

I therefore desperately ask you guys for some advice. Is there any promising drill or swing thought that might finally help me?

There are many causes for this problem.

 

My first question, are you lifting your torso in the backswing and NOT maintaining a CONSTANT spine angle during the ENTIRE backswing. A swing video would be helpful if that is not your problem.

I does not look like I am lifting my torso. However, I feel my left side becomes quite loose at the highest point of my backswing. Ocassionally, my upper body then also tilts to the left.

 

In the meantime I found out that I am able to keep my left arm straight in the backswing. However, I have to consciously force it, meaning I really have to stretch it far away from the body (like I wanted to reach something distant). As a result, the left arm and the left wrist feels quite tense.

 

Is this right? Should I continue working on it?

There is a terrific training device called the "right angle." It attaches to your right arm (for right handers), and you can set if for the amount of right elbow fold you desire. By maintaining the angle of your right elbow, you can maintain the width in your swing. Whenever I feel my swing getting long and loose, I strap it on and hit balls with it. Because it controls your swing arc, it really promotes a rotational action and keeps your swing feeling very tight.

 

It felt a little awkward at first, but after I got used to it, I started making great contact, and got used to the feeling of a tight golf swing.

To restrict the length of your backswing, I would encourage the thought of maintaining the gap between your knees as you swing the club back. Don't allow your front kneecap to get closer to your back kneecap.

Exactly what MIKPGA said, you want to "coil" using your hips as a mount in which to generate a load of power from. Turning tends to twist up your legs and the gap between your back and front leg narrows which weakens your setup and throws you off balance, this causes over compensation of the lower body forcing reverse pivots and such which is why you are seeing the club head. Flare both feet outward slightly and stabilize your base during the backswing! Get your hands high as you stated you do already and finish from there by "Uncoiling" through the ball.
