Hogan Apex 3 shafts in 76 staff bullet back blades

Id like to put a set of hogan apex 3 shafts from a set of edge irons i have into a set of 76-77 staff blades. I dont think the apex are tapered as they do not seem to fit all the way down hosel. Is it fairly straigh foreard to bore these hosels out a bit or am I asking for trouble ?

really liked the feel of these shafts in the edge. Was told they should work in the staff blades but i dont think they are going all way into hosel.

Thnx in advance

Superdan I plan on keeping those heads for future use !

Will be a great iron for me in few yrs.

Part of this process for me is trying to use what I have rather than buy new. Were such a throw away society im just as guilty-so I figure I not only gain more exp with club repair etc but im not purchasing more new "stuff".

I know im opening myself up here but thats just me.

Just glad I found a shaft that feels right and fits in my Staffs !

On this subject of Apex shafts,, Were the apex 4 shafts which I believe to be equivalent to stiff , as stiff as say a Dynamic S400 or S300? I have no issue hitting my Apex Plus with the Apex 4 shaft but my Muirfields with Dynamic Gold S300 shafts are trouble for me, My swing speed is not fast enough for a lot of stiff shafted clubs. The only stiff shaft I hit well seem to be my Wilson X-31's with Aluminum Stiff shaft and My new set of Wilson X-31's that have shafts marked UltraLite Power Groove S.

Any help is appreciated, Im thinking of pulling the Apex shafts and putting into the Muirfields..

As I understand it, the difference between DG and Apex is weight and bend point. The TT shaft that's most compared to Apex is the Dynalite Gold. The Dynalite family of shafts is lower bend point and lighter than the Dynamic. Both the Power Groove and aluminum shafts in your X31's are lightweight shafts as well, tho I have no idea of bend point. I like the Power Groove Plus stiffs in my '74 X31's too- I find they swing pretty easy.

Always thought Apex 4's were less "stiff" feeling than TTDGS300. May be more to do with shaft weight and bend profile than anything else. Cannot get along with S300/400 at all these days. Can at least tolerate 4's on a part time basis, although my preference is less flex all things being equal.

Have a set of Apex 4 pulls (3 - PW) out of a set of '99 Apex's available. Fully prepped for install. PM me if you have interest.

I came across a post by Freddie about 5 years ago when he observed that Bernhard Langer had Apex 4 shafts in his Wilson Tour Blades back in 1992.

OPs plan has pedigree!

I read that to somewhere and if I'm right in memory the Hogan people weren't too happy about langer winning his 93 masters with those shafts. I think he still plays hogan apex mid irons today

No- Ben Hogan himself was incensed. The memo came less than a week after Langer won the '93 Masters. I read it!

My friend the Hogan club repairman might have the memo in his files....

Will see if he does...

It has been posted on here before, recently in fact, but I'm not sure what thread it is in. Try the Best Drivers of the 1990's thread in Hickory, Persimmon and Classic Clubs.

Found this ditty in the linked post above:

It was addressed to ALL HOGAN ACCOUNT HOLDERS

"EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY. ALL APEX SHAFTS are to go into APEX IRONS ONLY.

Anyone who has an account with Hogan is found violating this practice, their account WILL BE TERMINATED." I

....something to that effect.

Doesn't some Hoganista have a copy of the memo...somewhere?.

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm a Hogan fan myself. My 1972 Apex irons (2 thru E) have Apex 3 stock shafts. My second Equalizer (set 4 degrees weak) 'old school gap wedge;) ' has a 3 also. Then I went to the dark side. I put an Apex 3 into my Wilson JP sandwedge. Finally, I went all in. I installed Hogan Apex 3 shafts into my 1952 Macgregor Tourney M75W driver and 3 wood! Apologies to Ben Hogan, but those shafts are just too good for me. Mike

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
