Scrambles - Love 'em or Hate 'em

Love them when they are random draw with other golfers,2man, 3man, or 4man. They are several fantastic big money scrambles in Southeast Michigan with rangers on each hole or play in groups of eight and keep each others score. Only way to play..

A course nearby did a scramble with a spotter on every green. So, they know what their score was based on whether they drove the green (when applicable) and if they made the putt or not. A buddy that works at the course said he was shocked at how few scores were in the 50's. (-11 is a 60, so -12 or under to get in the 50's) He's used to a good percentage of the teams turning in scores in the 50's when there are no spotters. I guess that shouldn't surprise me...

Hate 'em, giving them up after this year. Too expensive, slow play, and seems like they are all played from the white tees. Golf was not meant to be played from under 6,000 yards.

Love em, play with my dad for a brewmasters tournament every year, winners are chosen by randomly assigned flights, so not necessarily the very best team will win, unless you crushed everyone

I'm usually the distance guy and it's usually a frustrating round of golf. In a normal round, I usually tee off with fairway wood or driving iron about 40% of the time and almost never hit fairway woods to tight greens.

 

In a scramble I have to take all of the idiotic lines over water and around trees. I take 14 driver swings trying to hit every ball 325 after someone else takes a nice easy swing and hits the safe drive 230. I'm the only one with a chance to get to the par 5s in 2,so I spend the day spraying 270 yard fairway woods that I wouldn't try normally.

 

We end up somewhere around 6-8 under and feel great, then go into the clubhouse and find out that the winning team is 16 under and has an old unathletic guy who just happened to hit a 350 yard drive on the long drive hole and get 2 closest to the pin's.

 

I have a scramble coming in about a week and I'm dreading it, but the company is paying for it and it gets me 4+ hours with the CEO so can't really pass that up.

Other than a couple of small things at our club, I usually just play in the 1st Tee Scramble here each year, which is fun and requires at least. Mini tour or +3 am on one's team to have a chance to win.

However. I played with my then 9 year old daughter in the VSGA parent/child two person scramble and it was about the best round of my life. On my favorite course around here, Spring Creek, and they have men under 50 playing from the 6800 yd tees, so it was real golf for me. My kid probably plays to about a 36 or so, but can hit some reallhly good shots and did she ever! She drained a few bombs and her 120 yd drives off the kids tees often played better than my 280-305 off the mens tees. We shot a 77 w a couple of doubles, finished lower-middle of the pack in her age group and had a fantastic time.

She loved bailing me out when my shot didnt work. Whenever we could use her shots without losing much, we did.

Love and hate them. They can be fun and meet new people. A day outside.

 

Hate it when I am partnered with the two guys who finish a 750ml of booze by the 4th hole. That has happened more than once.

Love scrambles, I tend to play my best golf in scrambles where I have no idea what my actual score is and my confidence is sky high because my playing partners can't break 100, and I'm usually several drinks in.

 

But ya, no mulligans, no string, try to play in under 6 hours, shoot 18 under and lose to a group of drunk guys in tank tops... I get all the hate... I guess they do suck.
