2 Courses in Aberdeen

Considering 2 rounds in Aberdeen before heading down to Edinburgh. Choice of Trump International, Cruden Bay, or Royal Aberdeen; which would be the best 2 based on course quality and experience.

Very tough choice.

 

I'd be inclined to go with Trump and Cruden Bay, except that it's probably logistically a bit easier to do Trump and Royal Aberdeen.

Royal Aberdeen is a much better course than Cruden Bay in my opinion, far better. That said Cruden is quirky and brilliant fun.

Royal Aberdeen has quite possibly the best opening 9 holes in Scotland. The back 9 is not as good as the front, but only by comparison. Murcar Links next door is another great course that is an enjoyable round. I've played Cruden Bay multiple times and it is a great course - but even the most die-hard Cruden Bay fans will tell you there are 6 magnificent holes, 6 good holes and 6 mediocre holes. That being said, the 6 great holes make it worth the trip. The other course you mentioned is over-priced, over-groomed and over-rated. After you walk off of it you'll wonder why you didn't go to a true Scottish golf course.

I've not played Trump Aberdeen but I've only ever heard rave reviews, no negative comments at all.

Between Trump and Royal Aberdeen, I think it depends on what you are looking for. Royal Aberdeen is the traditional, classic links. Trump is a modern update of the links. Trump reminded me of courses in Arizona, only instead of cactus and desert outside the fairway, there are dunes and waving grass. I think Trump is worth playing, once, but on my next trip I'll probably skip it.

My thoughts exactly. Cruden Bay is one of the most unique golf experiences you're ever likely to have, with some of the most dramatic (in every sense of the word) holes in the world, and some of the quirkiest. It's my favorite of the three.

 

Royal Aberdeen is a more traditional links, but still loaded with interesting features you don't find in many other places. Plus, the off-course experience is wonderful. The clubhouse, the golf shop, and the overall atmosphere is like stepping back in time.

 

Like mentioned above, the Trump course is more of an American-style faux-links dropped between the sand dunes. Unlike true Scottish links courses, the holes don't much play over or around the dunes. It's a missed opportunity. And there's really nothing at Trump that you won't find more interesting, more spectacular versions of at Cruden and Aberdeen.

Look into the documentary "You've Been Trumped" about what he did to the local Scots neighboring his course. It might help you decide whether you want to play International or not.
